Kuyt hopeful old mates can win the title

Dirk Kuyt says the recent wins over Arsenal and Everton have shown that Liverpool can win the league this season and he's backing the deadly duo of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge to fire his old side into next year's Champions League.

 

"Liverpool are on fire and have produced some stunning football at times this year," the former Liverpool striker told FourFourTwo in an exclusive interview you can find on their website. "The 5-1 win against Arsenal was unbelievable. I watched the 4-0 victory over Everton and was blown away by it, but the league performance against the Gunners eclipsed that.

 

Like many fans, Kuyt is now beginning to believe that a top four finish is the minimum his old club might go on to achieve in the coming weeks. "If I'm honest, two weeks ago I'd have said it was a big ask for Liverpool to win the title this season" said the Dutchman.  "Back in August their target started off as a Champions League place and that is still the number one priority. 

 

"They still have to overhaul three teams to win it, but who knows what will happen. They are right in the mix now. It's a close league and they have shown they are a real force, particularly at Anfield. With Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in attack they will score goals for fun and that is crucial in any title-winning side.

 

Kuyt experienced many great European nights during his time at Anfield and even scored in a Champions League Final in 2007, and he's understandably eager to see his old club return to the big dance. "Their chances of finishing in the top four are very good and being back in the Champions League would be a huge experience for the younger players and their development. It would also give Brendan Rodgers the chance to pit his wits against Europe's best managers too.

 

"If they can do that by winning the title that would be unbelievable. Everyone in Liverpool is desperate for that and I am no different. I'm an adopted Scouser now playing in Turkey but I still keep a close eye on how my old mates are getting on. I'd love them to win the league and they are moving in the right direction."

Dirk was about as good a pro as it's possible to be, and his comments now shine through as being the sort of thing we got used to from him.  A throwback personality in so many respects, and when Kenny said about Carra that no footballer has ever gone about his job better, I reckon Dirk wouldn't be far off that, if at all.

 

Was a great player to have in the squad and came up trumps with big goals on a number of occasions.  I miss him being at the club, especially as a person, as he'd be excellent for us in that capacity now.

i remember during the commentary of england vs holland game shortly after the carling cup, martin tyler spent about a minute talking about how he met dirk and how happy dirk seemed regarding that cup win.

im aware of his goals and they were important, 07 at Goodisons probably my favourite derby game win because of the hilarious manner of it and he got both goals plus his 'tackle', he was great at penalties and great at rebounds but there were quite a few games where i wondered why he wasn't dropped
