Just bought a house and it needs a new bathroom and kitchen, what are people's thoughts about the best way to go about it? At the moment I'm thinking just go to Rapid and say 'look I'm giving you two jobs here instead of one, knock some money off or I'll go to Pimpy Paul's Bathroom Kingdom in Maghull.'

Do you mean get rapid to supply the people doing the work aswell? Do they even do that?

Ok, one for those who've recently installed new kitchens/know anything about such things, what was the best thing(s) you did, what would you have done differently if you were doing it now / had had more money to spend?

Tell me more about your worktop decision.

As you might have guessed, we're planning a bit of upgrading in ours. How much has yet to be decided, however, one of the key areas will be the worktops and how much to spend. I'll be thinking of the budget, he'll be thinking 'to hell with it'. But having put up with good enough for too long I do want something to be proud of at the he end of the job. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Island unit, it's all about the island unit

Next house, mister, next house.

This project's about upgrading the oblong room we've got, rather than knocking down walls and shit.

Wall mounted v freestanding range ovens, Corian v marble v mdf worktops, extractor fans, splashbacks, neat ideas, that kind of thing

Thinking about getting a bigger house so the kids don't have to share bedrooms.

What's the consensus on the lower maintenance vs living space decision? For example a big house built 1980-1990ish or a smaller one built 2000ish to 2010 or so?

Section, I hope I'm not too late telling you this but don't get a chain store to fit anything likes bathroom or a kitchen for you. One guy I used to play footy with says they charge ridiculous amounts up to 75% more for you to get it done by them. If you can find a decent builder/joiner they can buy the stuff over the trade counter and then do it themselves. Also if you offer them cash they will usually do it cheaper as they won't be putting it through the books. The big if is whether you can find a decent joiner/builder.

Furniture wise there is a decent warehouse on Kirkby Industrial Estate that sells cheap furniture, I've bought an in built wardrobe from them for £800 and they delivered it and fitted it for free. They are also decent for sofas and kitchen tables. They have a Facebook page so it's worth having a look.

Buy as big as you can afford, Al. With kids there is no such thing as too much space

The best things I did were getting a big fridge freezer from the Curry's outlet store at knockdown price and jibbing off the idea of an expensive worktop. Pleased with the oak blinds to match the units too.

Repped and commended for answering the question...
