  1. You have to manage the situation. Thanks to modern communication systems, the lines between work time and off-work time are disappearing for many people, especially if the job involves communicating internationally. If something important comes up during your off time, and you're in a position to deal with it (ie. you're not asleep or out for the evening), then deal with it. If it's not important, simply ignore it and deal with it when you're next in the office.
  2. Spot on about that deliberate Fellaini stamp. I don't know how he got away with it, considering Schweinsteiger was subsequently cited for his push on Reid. They both should have been off.
  3. The Wallabies (to their credit) managed to keep Milner-Skudder and Julian Savea relatively quiet. The AB's in turn managed to recycle the ball quickly at the breakdown and nullify the strengths of Pocock and Hooper. The AB's had greater quality in all other areas and, apart from that 10 minutes when Ben Smith was in the sin bin, pretty much controlled the game throughout. Great to see Dan Carter go out on a high after disappointments at previous World Cups.
  4. You don't see it at international level, I agree; the players are too canny and well-coached. It still happens a fair bit at club and provincial level.
  5. Rugby referees are treated with a lot more respect partially because any dissent from a player over a penalty results in the position of the penalty being moved a further 10 metres into the offending player's territory. Rugby is a territorial game (unlike football), so this is a significant sanction.
  6. Stay away from chiropractors
  7. For an excellent, and balanced, account of the last two years of the Pacific War I'd recommend "Nemesis" by Max Hastings. He covers all of the aspects mentioned in this thread, plus a lot of others - for example the fate of the tens of thousands of Allied POW's still in Japanese hands if the war hadn't been brought to a swift conclusion.
  8. Yep - you close the drawer to a certain point, then the closing mechanism takes over and "self-closes" gently. If you're thinking about deep drawers, you will put more stuff in them, which in turn means more weight. Closing a heavy drawer too quickly causes the problem we experienced, which was always much worse with the larger drawers.
  9. Tightening screws on the brackets that attach the drawer front to the sides. And if you don't do it promptly and regularly, the brackets work loose, bend and fracture. And then you replace the bracket. Only the (German) manufacturer eventually stopped making that model. So I recently replaced all the brackets, which meant replacing the drawer sides, as the new brackets didn't fit the old sides.........you get the picture. While replacing the drawer sides, I did what should have been done originally and fitted soft-closing attachments.
  10. Champ - get soft-closing drawers in your kitchen. Costs a bit more up front, but saves endless hassle in the long term.
  11. And for our older listeners:- Barry Manilow, Tony Orlando and ....... Donovan
  12. Years ago. The stewardesses were all old grannies. Something about US labour laws. I felt like getting out of my seat and serving the meal for them. Oh, and the food was crap too. Never flown with them since.
  13. Wallasey Borough Council Cleansing Dept. - depot in Gorsey Lane, not far from the 5 bridges. I was 16 and stuck in an office with two spinsters - one in her 40's who'd been (literally) jilted at the altar years before, and therefore took a dim view of all males, the other mid-30's, and never been kissed - with good reason. Spent most of my day filling in forms and answering phone calls from housewives whose bins hadn't been emptied. Only thing that kept me sane was spending all my tea and lunch breaks with the blokes in the garage. Stuck it for 4 months then got an apprenticeship at Lucas in Fazakerley and never looked back - until now !
  14. Bette Midler singing in "For the Boys" Edward Woodward and Bryan Brown walking to face the firing squad in "Breaker Morant" and this:-
  15. Hi Dave, enjoyed the report, as always. On the topic of sporting injuries, in my experience two things happen as you get older:- (1) Injuries happen more easily and (2) Injuries take progressively longer to heal. My advice ? Give up the contact sport as soon as injuries spoil your enjoyment of it, and find another sport. Oh, and get proper treatment for any injury you suffer, and the sooner the better. And have a very Happy Christmas !
