Girl of colour tweeted yesterday that thousands dead is a bit more important than If a march goes ahead.

Literally every single reply told her to fuck off "home '(she was born here)

It's probably a social media thing but I've never known a time when it was so blatant.

That's because there has never been a time when the majority of the replies are manufactured.

An aggressive Jewish counter protestor was assaulted and hit his head on the pavement, it's literally in the report including a Rabbi asking people not to speculate until the details come out. Just for some clarity on what happened. Tragic but seems a lot of people are more pissed off at this than a murderous bombing campaign against women and children. No racism there... no not at all.

From the information available, it seems a stretch to paint this as a racist murder.  Not in any way justifying the assault, but it seems more likely to be motivated by politics than by race and it doesn't seem to have been intended to kill.

Grim and tragic all the same.

It's a horrible situation. It looks more like manslaughter to me. No consolation for the dead guy or his family though.

Unless there's a video available, it looks like it's a toss up between what's more believable, one group saying it was a tussle where the guy fell and cracked his head and the other saying it was an altercation where the megaphone got used to hit him on his noggin.

I'm not sure why this ended up in the Racism thread as it's 2 protests that happened to cross paths and ended tragically for one person.

I think there is an assumption Paul was a Jew.

All the reports say he was; what would make it belong in this thread would be if he was attacked for being Jewish (or if there was a reasonable assumption that that was the case, for example if the assailant was part of an institutionally anti-Semitic organisation).  I've not seen anything to suggest that's the case.

Ah Angry beat me to it. I'm just thinking if it was specifically because he was Jewish then you'd expect the suspect to have kicked off with a few protestors whereas all the indications are this was an isolated incident between 2 people.

“What exactly transpired prior to Mr. Kessler falling backward isn’t crystal clear right now,” Fryhoff said, adding that it’s also unclear how many people were involved.

He cautioned people to not jump to conclusions, and “refrain from spreading rumors or spreading misinformation on social media or other platforms, as that can not only hinder our investigation, but it can cause unnecessary panic in our community.”

Rabbi Michael Barclay of Temple Ner Simcha in Westlake Village, near Thousand Oaks, also urged people to wait for investigators to determine what happened, writing on X, formerly Twitter to “not let this become a spark that starts an inferno.”

Moorpark professor arrested in death of Paul Kessler - Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)

Quote

A Moorpark College professor has been arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a Jewish protester who suffered head injuries during clashes between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel demonstrators earlier this month in Thousand Oaks.

Loay Abdelfattah Alnaji, 50, of Moorpark was arrested early Thursday in the death of Paul Kessler, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department announced in a news release. Alnaji is being held in lieu of $1-million bail.

When reached at his home in the days after Kessler’s death, Alnaji declined to comment to The Times. An attorney for the professor has not been identified.

Kessler, who was part of a pro-Israel group protesting opposite a Free Palestine rally on Nov. 5, died hours after he fell backward during a confrontation between the two groups and struck his head on the ground.

Ventura County sheriff’s officials did not make an initial arrest, saying they had to unravel conflicting witness statements about what led to Kessler’s fall.

An autopsy determined that Kessler died as a result of a blunt force head injury and the death was ruled a homicide, according to Ventura County Chief Medical Examiner Christopher Young.

Prestwich: Man who wore antisemitic t-shirt in Jewish area jailed

A man who wore a t-shirt with offensive wording relating to the conflict in the Middle East while visiting a Jewish area has been jailed.

Robert Hughes was seen by members of the Jewish community walking along Kings Road in Prestwich on the morning of 9 October.

The 69-year-old from Whitefield, Bury, admitted antisemitic hate crime charges.

He was jailed for 12 weeks by magistrates in Bolton.

The Crown Prosecution Service said several witnesses had contacted the police to report the incident.

Two officers approached Hughes in the street and persuaded him to cover the t-shirt with a coat.

In a police interview he later admitted he had deliberately worn the t-shirt to provoke a reaction but denied any intention to cause distress and claimed his actions were an expression of his freedom of speech.

Senior crown prosecutor Matthew Siddall said: "Robert Hughes targeted an area in north Manchester, where he does not live, which is a predominantly Jewish area in order to provoke a reaction with the t-shirt he was wearing.

"He caused upset and distress to all those he came across that day with the offensive words he displayed on his clothing.

"While individuals have a right to freedom of expression, we won't hesitate to prosecute those who deliberately undermine public order by demonstrating hostility to anyone's race or religion."
