Andy Carroll, what does he do?

Other poor big signings have had some semblence of ability, Keane and Aquillani couldn't be labelled outright shit, they were overpriced and didn't perform. Carroll, Adam and Downing were outright shit, mediocre championship players. That was probably the worst transfer window business in living memory.

Mediocre Championship players?

What a load of shit. All three are capable Premier League players.

Amazing.

Truly. Amazing.

If you put just those two in an area and swung 100 crosses in Garcia might win one. If Carroll fell over.

Different that though Stu, you're talking out and out height and jumping ability. Crouch was relatively shite in the air despite being taller than God, Fowler was class in the air because he knew where the ball was gonna be. Garcia had that 'nose' for the flight of the ball too. Carroll was bog average at that stuff, Roberto Carlos could bang the world's greatest cross into him and he'd be in Hull eating a kebab.

It's amazing how much a defence will struggle to stop you heading the ball with out and out height and jumping ability.

Carroll is nothing like Crouch. His headers are generally powerful and they go where he wants them to.

He's any direct manager's dream player. As one of the best direct managers about knew when he bought him.

Didn't say he was like Crouch, I was pointing out there's more to being good in the air than just being taller than everyone else in the box.

Carroll being good in the air was a total myth, it was probably the least weak part of his game but that was about it. Someone like Fowler could nod a ball into a player's path with the back of his head while looking at his watch and thinking about dinner, carroll just provides a slightly larger than most platform for other people to try and bounce the ball off.

Carroll is a shit headerer of the ball. At least as far as shooting with the head goes. He's a forehead on legs. Winning balls because he is big and hefty doesn't mean much. It terms of quality, he's not a good headerer of the ball.

True, but if you wanted one of them to, you know, head the ball past the keeper and into the net, I'd aim for Garcia every time.

Exactly what I've been trying to say. Carroll gets his head on balls because he's tall, but this idea he's some brilliant player with his head is absurd. As an attacker who want billeting headers at goal for fun and scoring loads of them, he's bang average.

You could stick Robert Wadlow in the team and he'll win every header, but if the ball goes no where good, then I'll be sayng he's not very good either.

Garcia was a great header of the ball, by the way. Headed shots are worth a dozen of some oaf throwing his noggin at a long ball. Stu is right that Carroll is a decent option for a side punting the ball, but not because of headed ability but because of his heft and size means he can get his head into it. Cross one into him in the box and he's Shite.

There's a difference between making contact with the ball purely because of height and having the technique to head the ball when you head it.

Garcia had technique, Carroll is tall.

I'm fully aware of that.

Having technique doesn't lead to you consistently getting first contact, being brought back for corners and often needing the opposition to double mark you and come up with a specific plan to stop you winning every header.

This theme that it just hits him and he can't direct them where he wants is a fiction.

I know, it's far more agricultural than that, you get to do all that by virtue of being tall. Talent rarely comes into it.
