England 15th October 1066

Recommended Posts

The smoke has cleared,  the dead have been counted, the battle is over and King Harold Godwinson and his Saxons troops have won.

William the bastard has copped an unfortunate in the goads and his Norman Knights are on the retreat back to where they came from, a bit like England ever since.

In your view, what would the difference be in the make up society and social structure and would England and the integration of the United Kingdom have been any different?

My first guess is that, no matter who won and no matter how they dressed there would be an absolute fucking idiot somewhere in a village of no importance who decided it was his/her business to cast aspersions on how they dressed and behaved because he/she had a wife and a daughter.

Even though it was none of their business and didn't impact at all upon their lives at all.

It was called all sorts of things, then, after the dark ages into the even darker ages it was called Thatcherism.

Where fucking idiots with no compassion and even less intelligence were allowed a voice and a vote and eventually it led to a fat nappy wearing wanker becoming Prime Minister because he could be trusted with the economy.

Post fat nappy wearing wanker times, people who were once the enemy of ages became friends once a new foe had been found and a new Jesus from Luton had been exalted to rally behind like a new St. George.

Who was Palestinian.

Like Jesus.

And had never been to England.

And if either have them  had, then the best selling papers in  England would've had then hung for being subversive communists.

Luckily the Frogs won and it's not like that.

Godwinson hardly had a secure throne anyway. Plus the vikings would probably have come back, and the normans would probably have come back. So I think the Anglo-saxons were probably on their way out regardless. Could have been worse, the franks might have taken over instead!

Jewish people would probably have had a tough gig regardless, btw, as whoever was in charge would occasionally need a minority to blame for things. Plus, the influence of the Catholic church would have been significant regardless.

It possible changes everything.

The Plantagenet dynasty lay the foundations for everything, 400 years on the throne.

Had Harold Godwinson won he would still have had threats at home from the likes of Edgar Ætheling who had a better claim to the throne as he was part of the House of Wessex and so had a direct line to Alfred.

The Godwinson were warlords and fought amongst themselves, they were heavily linked to the Danes and Viking invasions as the Norman's. They got power from King Cnut and Harold's own brother was part of Harold Hardrada invasion which Godwinson defeated at Stamford Bridge.

It's impossible to tell but I doubt there wouldn't have been a successful rebellion at some point. Possibly the Bergundians or the French. Though if it hadn't happened by the 1090s they might have able to solidify power at much of the big powers in Europe had a jolly in the holy lands taking back Jerusalem

I think it's just as interesting is what happens if Harold Hardrada wins at Stamford Bridge. Who do the Saxon chieftain back once William arrives. It most likely leads to a civil war and my money would be on William with his more advanced army and use of cavalry over the viking/saxon shield wall
