Matip is very good,he proved it at Schalke for a good while but he is the ball player of your centre backs and the 'rough stuff' is usually left to his partner. It was Hoewedes at Schalke and maybe that Papadopoulos fella beforehand. Having Lovren or Klavan alongside tends to negate a good chunk of his ability though.

Not really 9 God. I think Lovren is average and needs to be replaced...l I happen to think Matip isn't great either. He's a very passive defender for one. The reason I cried all summer for us to sign Van Dijk AND Maguire to relegate both Lovren and Matip to the bench. Without a proper defensive midfielder, we need both our centre halfs to be dominant in duels. Not unlike Vidic and Ferdinand, that season they won the league playing behind Carrick and Scholes.

Are you the headwand of the silverlining era?

A settled defence and goalie might help. Changing the players every game can't help. Stick with the same back 5 for a few games and surely there'd be improvement? At this rate they've no idea who they'll be playing with or even if they'll be playing - how can that help read each other's game?

Matip's the only CB we have that has the required ability and can reach any kind of consistent good level.

We need to pair him up with someone good real quick. I'm not comparing him to Hyypia, but can you imagine what he might have looked like if he'd been partnered up with Ruddock? This is what's happening to Matip right now.

Houllier had the right idea, when he revamped the entire central defense in one shot. We're wasting our time putting him around lost causes like Lovren and Klavan.

Ah, we're going for character assassination of each of our players now? Cool.

You know how it works Jim. We're Liverpool and we should be winning every game because we used to be brilliant. When we don't, they're all shit, the manager' tactics are shit, and some on here even threaten to give up the whole football thing because of it! We have a good win, and we can put in a challenge for the Title. They're not fickle though.

Matip has benefitted greatly from simply not being Lovren. He might form a great partnership with someone else but I think he’s been hugely underwhelming since he’s been here and isn’t dominant at all.

He's not a yard dog, ale-house brute, that's for sure. His positioning, and his ability on the ball, are fucking great. Partnered with VVD... good times.
