Don't understand why Drogba is the archetypal example of the big and strong template working. He was fast as fuck, skilful and an absolutely disgraceful cheat to boot. His power or size really wasn't that important, he was the same height as Sturridge, who coincidently is about the same height as Benteke.

Since I was the one that brought his name into it; It was more to disprove that big and strong can't be a recipe for top, top strikers. I happen to think Benteke share many of the same qualities as Drogba (and Shearer). One of them being pace (I'd pick Benteke in a footrace with prime Drogba btw). Drogba was a bit more skilful and certainly a bigger cheat, but I strongly disagree with your assertion that his power or size wasn't important, it's part of what made him unplayable (and why a lot of football fans over the world despised him). He would absolutely bully the centrebacks of the league in a physical sence, and whenever they tried to dish something back he would fall to the floor sniper-style, earning free-kicks in dangerous positions as well as penalties. Refs would be conned solely by his reputation as a strong player, immediately assuming a foul must have happened for the big guy to have gone down.

Btw, not that you didn't know this... Both Benteke and Drogba are/were considerably stronger than Sturridge, who relies almost solely on his pace.

Benteke is clearly a very good player already, I think anyone who doesn't recognise that is blinded by our past failings in signing players from this league. He's not a massive lump of a galoot you can only hoof the ball to like some people might have you believe.

Ideally I'd prefer a Vietto or a Lacazette or someone of that ilk but wouldn't it be nice to have a dominant player like benteke in the squad? The only downside is quite a big one, the price. (And Sturridge's injury proneness)

Edit: Having read your other posts about Benteke, I doubt you have seen more than a minute of youtube clips on him, nevermind a full game of football.

Please don't patronise me. I've watched enough of him to know what he is. A good player who plays to his strengths but would be a bad fit for our club. Yes I got carried away with emphasising the point that he's a target man, but that's what he is. Nothing will change that, unfortunately.

When we over pay for him, as we invariably will, I'll support him as I've supported others, and I'll be the first to put my hands up and say I was wrong if he's a success. I just highly doubt that he will be, simply because we're not a side that will consistantly play the way he needs us to for him to be effective.

Decent write-up there from a Villa fan on Benteke for anyone who can be arsed reading it.

Read it. It's awfully convenient that every single reservation (every... single... one...) that fans have about his purchase is apparently bull shit. It's also telling that the author is apparently a villa fan, but only has two posts, both about Liverpool...

Every single time a rival fan or journalist comes out slagging our fans off because we don't want their player at exorbitant prices, going on about how we're wrong and he'll be a huge success etc... every one of those players invariably flop. I remember Aston Villa fans doing the exact same thing to convince us that Downing is worth 20 million, Shearer wrote a big article about how Andy Carroll will be the next Alan Shearer for Liverpool, had some idiot Bolton fan saying Bogdan is better than Mignolet and how Charlie Adam would make the step up and 'replace Alonso' from a Blackpool fan.

All those players failed. Point is our fans know more than anyone what it takes to make it at a club like ours, we've signed complete dross so many times we have an almost telepathic understanding of what shite is and when we're being lured into a trap.

Unfortunately the people that own and make decisions on behalf of the club don't seem to see it. If these fans of rival clubs are having to come out to write these overblown bullet point articles to convince our fans that spending 32.5m on Benteke is the right thing to do, then that says it all. Whenever you see, premier league proven, holding out for release clause, poor injury record, big man up top, flashing warning signs are going of.

The more this drags out, the more i think about all the similarity's with some of our biggest ever transfer failings, the more i think we should swerve this. I like the player but it's just got every hallmark of a failure so far and we've been down this road before.
