Freedom of speech

Interesting video. I don’t really care what views people have on the political nature of the BLM movement, as I personally think the wider movement is unfortunately undermined by some pretty unsavoury people and ideas, but why would anybody - much less the leader of any free speech organisation - think banning taking the knee is a good idea. Even if it’s all the things you say it is, then so what? Freedom of speech and freedom of expression means that they should be free to express these ideas in that way.

That said, the left on Twitter do the same sort of stuff when it comes to anything remotely right wing. Very little of this is actually about defending freedoms and actually about shutting down those you don’t like or agree with. As it ever was.

Him and his ilk are a fucking stain on society. Anti-mask, spout shite for cash and recognition, controversial for the sake of it disgusting lowlife cunt.

Michael Rosen tweeted yesterday that this time last year, Young was telling anyone who'd listen that ventilators don't save lives, while he (Rosen) was in a Covid coma, having his life saved by a ventilator.

The shit that Young spouts often strays into "shouting FIRE in a crowded theatre" territory.

Yes, I don't actually understand what it is that Young wants, or believes in, he just seems to go around shouting FREEDOM but seemingly is oblivious to the fact that freedom cannot be absolute if one person's idea of freedom is to make someone else's life miserable.

His tantrums about Covid freedoms seem to suggest that he's not comfortable in his own skin, he doesn't like being alone with himself or his family.  Does he own some business or something where he's losing money?  If he is, I could start to understand it, but him, JHB, Laurence Fox, they seem to all just be outspoken freedom lovers, as if the rest of us somehow weren't aware of freedom and what life was like a year ago.  But....we do.

It's a trend amongst anti-mask/lockdown/other peoples wellbeing mate. Claim to be freedom fighters when in reality they are horrible selfish twats. Young got himself a bigger platform amongst that ilk by being a sceptic and got more attention than ever before so he just ran with it. Same as other cunts on twitter. I mean, one is a z list actress who is more famous for calling people anti-semitic and bullying 16 year old girls on twitter.

Protesters destroy pro-life stand at Oxford University freshers’ fair

All students have a right to freedom of expression, say university chiefs, after protesters tussle with members of anti-abortion society

Oxford University has condemned the destruction of a pro-life stand at a freshers’ fair

A group of students threw the contents of the Oxford Students for Life (OSFL) stall into a bin bag on Thursday, before being confronted by security guards patrolling the fair.

The protesters refused to leave until they were assured that the stall would not be reinstated, and threatened to tear it down if it was put back up.

Photos of the event show the protesters tussling with members of the anti-abortion society, the Oxford Student reported.

OSFL has described itself as a “non-sectarian, student-run society” that "seeks to promote a culture of life at the university and in the wider community, advocating the protection of human life and dignity from conception to natural death”.

Oxford University has condemned the protesters' actions, saying the academic institution has a strong history of free speech.

A spokesman for the university said: "The university supports the right of all our students and student groups to express views of all persuasions within the law.

“We therefore condemn this afternoon’s protest against the Oxford Students for Life stall, which was an attempt to deny the right of expression to others.

“We have a robust freedom of speech policy which states that 'within the bounds set by law, all voices or views which any member of our community considers relevant should be given the chance of a hearing'.

Meanwhile, the president of OSFL defended the group’s presence at the event, saying they were disappointed by the “small group of students” taking direct action.

The OSFL said: “Like most student societies of the university, we use the Freshers’ Fair to promote our mission and events.

"As someone who describes herself as a pro-life feminist, I believe promoting discussion and serious reflection on issues like abortion which affect women so profoundly is not only deeply worthwhile, but necessary.

“We are disappointed that a small group of students decided to take direct action against our stall, and are grateful to those working at the fair who have worked to protect our right to maintain our presence there.”

The protests came after an anti-abortion society at Exeter University was forced to call the police when members received death threats from students.

You know I don't make Lib Dem policy, right? And is that really the major topic of the moment?

I wondered if you knew the lib dems position on this so called 'David's law', its apt as this is the freedom of speech thread.

Not the major topic?  Are you for realise? The crackdown on social media has been across every media outlet since the poor souls death.. and has now morphed into a possible new law, which has also been discussed on almost every media outlet in the country. Here's this mornings Guardian headline,

Hmm, 'scratches head' wonders if sidestepping.
