It’s a bit of a novelty seeing most of our summer signings actually bringing something to the team. It’s been a while since we had as much success in the transfer market as we had last summer, and although Sadio Mané was clearly the most successful of the new recruits, Joel Matip may ultimately prove to be the best signing in the long term. Hopefully we'll have more of the same this summer. Matip was one of Jurgen Klopp’s priority signings a year ago. Knowing that the Schalke man's contract was due to expire in the summer of 2016, Klopp made him his main defensive target and got the deal done quickly and efficiently. Klopp had apparently contacted Matip not long aft…

I thought Jordan Henderson was brilliant this season. I wasn’t completely on board with Klopp’s decision to turn him into a “number six” and I did have some reservations about it. His performance at Burnley in the second game of the season seemed to justify those reservations, as he was terrible that day, but after that? Like I say, brilliant. In terms of the role he played, only Ngolo Kante was better. In fact, statistically that’s not strictly the case as Hendo's numbers compare favourably with anybody, Kante included, in most key categories. I'm not one for stats as you all know. I prefer to rely on my eyes for the most part when it comes to judging playe…

It seemed to me as though a lot of Reds welcomed Loris Karius as the second coming of Dino Zoff last summer simply on the basis that he wasn’t Simon Mignolet. Patience had worn thin with the Belgian so supporters were understandably thrilled that Jurgen Klopp was able to secure the brightest young keeper in the Bundesliga for a modest fee. Personally I swam against the tide on that one, not due to any great faith in the Mig, but because Karius just rubbed me up the wrong way with his stupid instagram posts of his tattoos and boyband haircuts. He was mates with Justin Bieber too, after the singer approached him to tell him how boss his tatts were.…

Full disclosure here; when I see Lucas on the team sheet, there’s usually a feeling of disappointment. I’m not proud of that and I’m not even sure why it is. It’s not as though I think he’s crap, and I quite like the fella. He’s a good player and has been a real stalwart these last few years, yet when I see that he’s playing, I can’t lie, I’m usually disappointed. And more often than not when the game is finished, it turns out to be totally unjustified disappointment and I feel like a right snide bastard. He rarely lets us down so I’m not entirely sure why I feel this way, but I suspect it’s due to a couple of things. Firstly, given that his role thes…

Nathaniel Clyne’s season went very much the same way as the team as a whole. Terrific before New Year but found it tough going after that and just didn’t look anywhere near as effective when Sadio Mané wasn’t there. Clyne is a full back whose biggest strength is defending, which is a rare commodity at top clubs these days. That’s not to say he doesn’t offer anything in attack, but he’s very streaky in that respect and more accomplished defending than he is attacking. He should be better than he is going forward though. I always feel like he doesn’t back himself enough and if he did he’d be much more of a threat. In the closing months of the season he …

Philippe Coutinho started and ended the season playing like a superstar. The bit in the middle was crap though, and because of that he’ll probably still be a Liverpool player next season. So at least some good came of that slump in form. I’ve long been a critic of the little Brazilian for two reasons. Firstly he’s inconsistent, and secondly, I didn’t like the way he was put on a pedestal by many of our fans simply because we no longer had a world class player and we desperately wanted him to be it. He was labelled ‘world class’ by some even though he hadn’t done it often enough to justify it. I haven’t changed my mind on either of those issues, but I d…

It wasn’t clear at the time of his signing, but Ragnar Klavan was brought into the club because Jurgen Klopp had it in mind to send Mamadou Sakho packing. Think about it, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip were always the preferred partnership, and while Lovren can fill either centre back slot, he prefers playing on the left of the two. Sakho can only play in that spot, so why would you also then sign another leftie in Klavan? The writing was on the wall for Sakho as soon as Klavan joined, but Klopp didn’t just bin the Frenchman immediately, even though the failed drugs test fiasco at the end of last season would have been justification enough to do so …

It’s not easy to assess Roberto Firmino’s season fairly because he was like two different players. There was Firmino the number nine, who was top drawer, and Firmino the stand in wideman, who was bang average. I find it difficult to be too critical of him when he is played in wide areas because although it doesn’t suit him and he’s nowhere near as effective there, but despite this he always puts in a shift and never complains. I don’t really like seeing him play there, but it’s hardly his fault that there’s a drop off in his performances when he’s moved out of the centre. He paid the price for his versatility, and frankly I feel he got a bit of a…

Ok, hands up who expected Sadio Mané to be as great a signing as he’s turned out to be? Not me that’s for sure, I had no idea he was that good. I was pleased we signed him and thought he’d be a good addition, but I wasn’t expecting him to immediately play like a frigging superstar and I also felt the fee seemed a little steep. It took just one game for me to change my mind though. That goal he scored at Arsenal was one of those moments you never forget. The kind of goal where you just can’t quite believe what you’ve just seen. Let’s revisit it for a second. He picks the ball up on the touchline, miles from goal, and at that moment there is absolu…

He started the season in the team basically through default after the man signed to replace him broke his hand in pre-season. With Loris Karius sidelined, the Mig had the chance to make the jersey his own in the opening weeks of the campaign. In fairness he didn’t do much wrong but neither did he do anything to make anyone change their opinion of him. The goals conceded were not down to his errors, but he wasn’t making any match winning saves and he didn’t bring any kind of calm assurance to his defence or indeed the crowd, who would often panic as he played one twos with his defenders while under pressure. Going into the season some fans thought he was usel…

What a complete waste of a year that was for Lallana. A pre-season injury kept him out until November when he was brought back too soon and had a setback. He came back again but then got injured minutes after coming on as a sub and basically missed the rest of the season. Jurgen said a few times over the year that it was incredible how well his team had done considering they’d been without a player as good as Lallana for the whole campaign. Lallana has always been a bit of a ‘teachers pet’ but think about how important he was last season and you can see where Klopp is coming from. Lallana's ability to run ahead of his front players and …

He’s still here? How’s that even possible? Moreno is the ultimate survivor. When the end of the world comes, it will just be him and the cockroaches, and he’ll still be the village idiot. There must be a reason that Jurgen Klopp keeps him around, it’s just that no-one can figure it out. I had a theory last summer though... Lucas had left and Bobby Firmino was moving house to Formby, so Klopp was worried about Phil Coutinho becoming unsettled. Little Alby was his best pal and the dressing room clown, so if keeping him around helped to keep Phil happy and entertained that was a small price to pay, as long as he wasn’t playing in any important games, …

Remember the first start Ox made for us? It was BRUTAL. Absolutely woeful. It was at Leicester in the League Cup. He played out wide and stunk the place out. On the bright side, he was so bad that things had to get better from there, and they did. Not straight away through. By his own admission it took him a while to learn how to play Klopp’s way. That’s understandable as he came from Arsenal, a team that looked like they hadn’t been coached since the mid 2000’s. Wenger just seemed to have given up in recent years and the impression I got from watching Arsenal was he basically just let the players do their own thing. I’m sure that’s not the case, but there was…

How did it take so long for Andy Robertson to get in the team? It’s bizarre when you look back on it. Klopp said that when he signed Robbo from Hull he told him what he needed to work on in order to get in the side. After a few months he still wasn’t getting a game so Robertson asked Klopp what he needed to do, and he was told “I told you when you came in what you needed to work on”. It was defensive play, apparently, which would be all well and good if it weren’t for the fact that Alberto Moreno was the man keeping him out of the side. Are we seriously expected to believe that Robertson was a worse defender than Moreno? While the Spaniard was impr…

I like Dejan Lovren. Always have. Don’t get me wrong, there have been at least two or three occasions when I wrote him off as not being good enough, but show me one man not named Jurgen Klopp who claims he hasn’t and I’ll show you a liar. Hell, even big Dejan himself has admitted there have been times when he thought he was no good. Perhaps that’s why he tries to mask his insecurities by being overly bullish and running his mouth at the most inopportune of moments? I thought he was done after the Tottenham debacle in October. I didn’t think he could come back from that but he did. How did he do it? Because whatever anyone wants to say about Lovren,…

My Mum loves him, my Dad hates him and I’m somewhere in between. I like Gini but he does my head in a bit. Sometimes he looks great, other times you wouldn’t even know he was on the field. Away from home especially he rarely seems to stamp any kind of authority on the game. Maybe that’s partly due to the job he’s asked to do, but when he isn’t playing, whoever is in his place is usually in the thick of everything. Whether it was Emre Can, Ox or Milner, you always knew they were on the field. With Wijnaldum that’s not always the case. When he’s good he’s very good though, which is what frustrates me about him. He had some great games, particularly i…

In the opening months of the season I don’t think any of us saw James Milner making the kind of impact that he did by the end of it. In fact, going into the season it was difficult to see him getting in the team at all. Despite having excelled at left back last season, between them Milner and Klopp came to the decision that experiment was over and that he was to be a full time midfield player again. Alberto Moreno was re-integrated into the side while Andy Robbo had joined in the summer, so Milner was now competing with Hendo, Emre Can, Lallana, Ox, Wijnaldum and Coutinho for a place in the midfield three. Unsurprisingly, more often than not he fo…

The injury to Nathaniel Clyne in pre-season was worked out great for Gomez and fellow youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold. It meant they got to split playing time at right back and both featured in a lot more games than they otherwise would have. Unlike Clyne, neither are natural right backs though. Trent was converted from midfield while Gomez is naturally a centre back, but stick them in Jeff Goldblum’s machine from the Fly and you’d have the perfect full back. Trent’s attacking and Gomez’s physical attributes and ability in one v ones would give us one hell of a player. Trent looks like he is becoming that player anyway, but Joe still has some work to do. …

This is probably going to be the hardest one of these to write because it’s really easy to forget that Joel Matip even played for us this season. I mean, I know he played, he played a lot. 31 starts to be exact. I just struggle to remember much about any of them. Before we signed Virgil Van Dijk in January, Matip seemed to play most of the games but he was pretty nondescript. Our defensive record in those games wasn’t great but it was usually others causing the problems. He wasn’t blameless either but he went under the radar as most of the vitriol would be hurled at Lovren, Moreno and Mignolet. Having shown some real signs of quality in his first seaso…

Are there still people out there who don’t rate Hendo? Yeah, probably. It’s always going to be that way. I mean, if he hasn’t won his critics over by now then he never will. He had a good season but it seemed like any time we had a bad result he came in for the most stick. Ok, not quite true, but he was often lumped in the scapegoat group with Mignolet, Moreno and Lovren, which was grossly unfair to him. The others often deserved to be in there, but Hendo is not in that category. For all the talk of him not being good enough or not being a natural holding player, he captained us to a Champions League final and he’s ‘unofficially’ captained England …

This is a difficult one to write with the events of Kiev still so fresh in the mind. Has there ever been a more chastening experience for any goalkeeper on such a big stage? It taints everything really. Any good that we’d seen from him this season - and there was a fair bit - has been rendered meaningless by that horror show against Real Madrid. Karius had made strides this year. He had shown real improvement dealing with crosses and he seemed to make more big time saves than Simon Mignolet did. There were a few really good ones that stood out, but there were also some hairy moments too, usually related to decision making. He conceded a penalty at Pala…

A fairytale season with a horror movie ending. When we signed Mo Salah last summer I was made up and I knew he’d be boss. I wanted us to bring in another Sadio Mané type who’d get us close to 20 goals and I thought he was that player. Ha! I’ve never been more happy to be wrong. He wasn’t a 20 goal frontman, he wasn’t even a 30 goal frontman. He was only the third 40 goal forward we’ve ever had. 44 goals, mostly from the right wing. Amazing. Lionel Messi is the only other man on the planet capable of doing that, but then that was a common theme throughout the season. Mo was doing things that only Messi was capable of. In fact, he has to be the grea…

Mr Dependable. Old Ragnar just comes in, does a job and then drops back out again without a fuss. Because he’s Estonian, in his 30s and cost a relative pittance, it goes under the radar that he’s pretty damn good on the quiet. For a fourth choice centre back he’s great. I’d probably take him over the fourth choice at most of our rivals. He had a good season overall. Like everyone else, he had some unconvincing moments in the first half of the season when we were leaking goals, but very few of the goals could be pinned on him. In the second half of the season when the team's defending improved, he slotted in with minimum disruption. Unlike with many…

All the shouts about us needing a 20 goal a season number nine, and it turns out we had one all along. 26 goals to be precise, but Firmino is so much more than just goals. The goals are almost a bonus. If he hadn’t scored any our front three would still have had 64 goals between them and Firmino is the one who links all of that together. The front three as a unit are the best in the world and Firmino is the man who makes it all tick. He isn’t as effective when either Salah or Mané are missing but then they aren’t as effective without him. Thankfully that’s rarely a problem as he’s Mr Indestructable and never misses games, Did he miss a single game…
