You don't need to score goals or provide direct assists to be creative. Sometimes the second or third last pass before a goal is the key one rather than the actual "assist". Look at Xavi for Barca - I bet his direct assists over the years isn't as good as some but he is one of the most creative players going.

 

For the record, I am not comparing Joe Allen to Xavi. And anyway, what's with the negative Allen buzz, he's one of the few who has come out of the first three horror shows with some credit.

Correct. I've grown so tired of the word 'assists' as it becomes used more and more in football as some sort of marker. It's useful in fantasy football but that's about it, someone having the final touch before another player scores doesn't mean they created the goal.

 

Equally, not having any assists doesn't mean a player hasn't created anything (Unless you're Downing...). Luka Modric went through the season before last without registering a single league assist. Yet that doesn't tell the whole story - look at their record without him in the team, how many goals were scored without him, how they played etc. You need players who can dictate the game, control the tempo, create space and if you like, assist the final assister.

 

Anyway, I can't see us getting anything from this game. Would take a draw if it was offered now. Sunderland have actually got a pretty decent, if unspectacular team.
