Remember "Cloughie Cloughie give us a kiss" and he stood up and started blowing kisses to the Kop. There was a massive mutual admiration thing going on, and then he destroyed it all with his Hillsborough comments, and whilst his own son was a Liverpool player to boot. It's something i'll never ever understand.

What did he say about Hillsborough?

In Stuart Pearce's book he claimed Clough told them not to drink the half time tea as Liverpool were "the kind of club who'd put something in it", and he never forgave us for the semi final 'replay', McMahon in particular. The league game immediately after it was one of the nastiest I've seen.

The seeds might have been sown even earlier. He told a story (a Forest fan I knew knew him) about Viv Anderson wanting to shake hands with a Liverpool player (you could probably guess which one) after they beat us in 1978, only to be greeted with the charming "Fuck off, nigger".

No excuses for what he wrote in his book, alcohol or publicity or ignorance. He did untold damage with those remarks, and a piss-poor 'apology' years later could not undo it or even come close.

Great manager, but I'll never forgive him ever.

I'm confused.

You have a problem with Clough for telling that story as opposed to the racist LFC player?

Yep, that was the kind of shit I was thinking about. I remember whe Pearce's book come out there was quite a bit about his, and Clough's, dislike of Liverpool.

Yes, of course.

I'm saying that the obvious respect he had during Shankly's time diminished when his Forest side started to cut into our domination. It wasn't that he suddenly went loopy, there were mitigating circumstances.

Liverpool-Forest was a very bitter rivalry for a while. I don't suppose the so-called socialist liked hearing his team referred to as "scabs" either.

Forest fans still resent us - I get plenty of shit when I go down the local to watch the game.

To be fair, most of it is relatively good-natured, but for a few of the older ones it's still a major issue.

I can never be arsed to get into it with them - smile politely and drink my pint.

Which is why his remarks in 1994 caused so much ruckus. Their fanzine had been pretty supportive of any Hillsborough campaign, then Clough wrote his book and they turned 180 degrees. This was the power he had, and it wasn't just over Forest fans either.

That he used that reputation to create controversy (which sells) and sided with the police and the Tories against ordinary people who'd suffered so much already makes him a greedy conniving shithouse in my book, I don't care if he'd won ten European Cups with Woking.

Which Liverpool player?

Forest fans are fucking thick as well - it really is quite terrifying talking to some of them.

And they're more deluded than Newcastle fans, which is a significant achievement.

To be fair they've won two european cups, they are in my mind bigger than some clubs in the prem because of that very fact.

Never is a long time, especially over a dead man. The hatred he had for himself was perhaps 10 times what you could possibly have for him.

His comments about Hillsborough were bizarre and out of order, but he did later write a rather heartfelt apology through his monthly column for Four-four-two. Now, that doesn't automatically reset everything, but eternal hatred seems wasted on a man who wasn't known for his choice of words.

He loved the spot light, and he loved controversial. At least in his mind, he was the best manager in Britain, if not the world, and yet his further successes were obstructed by the utter dominance of Liverpool. Without us, he could have won more trophies with Forest -- it's easy to understand how he came to resent us gradually, twisting his thinking.

Hell, just look at some of the irrational hatred uttered around here for players, fans, administrators of some other clubs, or even Liverpool. Given the spotlight, perhaps 30% of "the best fans in the world" would make themselves even worse a fool than Brian Clough. Have you seen Reality TV shows?

As Clough `was such a genius and total nut job with countless stories of what he got up to. Why the need to write the book and film as fiction based on fact? Kind of spoils it for me your not sure what happened and what didn't. When ex players come out and say it's a crock of shit what's the point?

The idiot writer did this 'yes, well, everthing's subjective, so I was just being honest by being fictional' interview. Nonsense. The Clough/Taylor relationship was incredibly intriguing, but you don't just look at it for a bit and think, 'Ooh, that's difficult' and then decide on what suits your own agenda. That kind of subjective idiot deserves to end up seeing another subjective idiot signed up to write a subjective account of their idiot life.

He's referenced at least 40 books at the end of it, it's hardly like he's written it on the back of a fag packet in 5 minutes.

Giles sued, when actually he doesn't come out of it looking that bad. Bremner's the one who looks like a complete twat.

There was a darkness to Leeds at that time which they've never been able to shake off since. Clough comes out of it quite well, like he'd done Football a massive favour by fucking them up!

Just saw it. A superb film. The best football film I have ever seen. There was a wonderful attention to period detail. A strong cast who were uniformly brilliant. A warm and entertaining film. Some would argue it was somewhat sanitized because it did not include the alcoholic problems of Taylor and Clough, or their liking of a bung, or Revie's vile approach to football (thuggery), his betrayal of England, or the allegations that he bribed other clubs.

But on the whole a superb film.

Went to see it last night.

Fucking ace film. The type you could even appreciate even if you had no interest in football whatsoever. It was lighter than the dark, but it was an interesting portrayal nonetheless. The relationship between Clough and Taylor was really well done and the integration of Revie as a seemingly unaware antagonist was a nice touch. Sheen was absolutely outstanding and the rest of the support cast- Spall, Meaney and Broadbent- were all on form.

Brilliant film.
