My brother being a bluenose twat claimed earlier that we only had 33,000 at Anfield for the Monaco game at home in 04-05, the season we won the Champions League. He has a habit of making up facts to back up his arguments and I want to show him up.

 

Is there anywhere on the net I can find the attendance figure for that game to check what it was? Tried to look myself but no luck

The attendance was poor. That was the first year they brought the loyalty in for the home cup games and a lot of people never got on to it (at first). Also nobody actually thought we would get to the final that year.

Tell him that's 11,000 more than their average league attendance in the 1980's, the most succesful decade in their history.

Our attendances in the first (couple?) Champions League campaigns were pretty poor to be fair. That pissed me off more than anything when I struggled to get tickets after we'd won the thing in 2005, when every man and his dog wanted to go, even for the Qualifiers.

the monaco game was one of the top three games I have seen under Benitez as well, I find it very strange that there was only 33000 at the ground.

I know football was irrelevant that day, but I don't believe it affected the attendance.

Wasn't that the game played on September 11th, about 4 hours after down town New York and DC resembled scenes from a bad Hollywood disaster movie? I think that may have had something to do with it - although haviing seen that we only mustered 33,000 for the Monaco game (I still can't quite believe that) perhaps not.
