NO BIDS FOR TORRES - ATLETICO CHIEF

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo insists there are no offers on the table for star striker Fernando Torres.

Some of Europe's biggest clubs have reportedly been interested in Torres over the last few years, with Champions League finalists Liverpool the latest side to be closely linked with the Spain international.

However, Cerezo claimed today they had received no approach from Liverpool or any other side for their club captain.

"We have had no offer from Liverpool for Torres," he said. "He is on his holiday and resting.

"All the players have a (buy-out) clause in their contract and in that case we would not be able to do anything, but I repeat that there has been nothing about Torres from any team.

"We are now working to create a good team for the coming year."

Torres, 23, scored 14 league goals in 36 starts this season as Atletico finished seventh in La Liga.

So most of the forum are about to have gigantic orgasims over LFC blowing 20m plus on a second rate player, but it does beat some of the third rate players currently at the club

FYI I consider Gerrard, Reina, Finnan, Javier & Carra to be first rate

If we sign him - and that's still a very big if - I'll be pleased about the backing that'll have been given to Rafa; the player himself I'll make my mind up about after seeing him play for us.

Atletico deny Torres bids as rumours place him in Liverpool

Written by Jim Boardman

Monday, 25 June 2007

The saga surrounding the possible transfer of Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid to Liverpool takes more twists and turns by the day, today being no different. Denials there had been any offers whatsoever came from Madrid, rumours the player had already been to Anfield came from Liverpool.

The possible move has been one of the big stories in England and Spain for the past few days, matched only by coverage of the move to Barcelona of Thierry Henry. So today Atletico's president Enrique Cerezo felt he had to issue a denial about bids for his 23-year-old captain: "We've received no offer from Liverpool or any other club or player," he claimed. "There is nothing linking Torres with any team. He's on holidays, he's resting and he'll return to work on July 9." He didn't say where Torres was going for his holidays.

He did confirm that Torres has a buy-out clause in his contract, although of course didn't reveal the figure: "All the players have a clause in their contract and in that case we would not be able to do anything, but I repeat that there has been nothing about Torres from any team. We are now working to create a good team for the coming year."

The actual amount of that buy-out clause has been speculated about repeatedly, with estimates as high as £27m, but it is now believed that Atletico's failure to qualify directly for Europe has activated a much lower amount of £18m.

Rafa's budget has been the subject of various rumours too, but his relaxed stance last week suggests that since the audit of his past transfers has been completed the new owners have agreed to make more money available than normal after all. Not that they'll readily admit this just yet.

It was clear even as early as the start of last week that Rafa was left short of funds compared to what he felt he'd been promised. So when it was leaked that Liverpool were interested in Torres the story needed some way of showing how Rafa could afford a fee believed then to be somewhere between £24m and £27m. This resulted in Luis Garcia, Peter Crouch and Djibril Cissé's names being added as part of a part-exchange deal. It's no secret Liverpool are looking to offload Cissé, but Rafa certainly does not want to lose Crouch.

With it being only a couple of weeks since Thierry Henry was "spotted" at Anfield, and past experience of Zinedine Zidane and his "new house" in Formby, Reds fans would be forgiven for dismissing out of hand today's internet rumours: that Fernando Torres was spotted in the offices at the stadium this afternoon. Except this time the stories have come from more sources, and more credible sources, and include manager Rafa Benítez being at the ground too.

There's no doubt Liverpool are interested in bringing Torres to Anfield, but for how much or how soon remains to be seen. Atletico's hands are tied if the release-fee is matched - but we still don't know for sure if the Reds are willing or able to match it. That said, there are signs that the owners have quietly committed to a greater budget than Rafa was left thinking he had two weeks ago. In fact Atletico themselves are now believed to have gone for one of the targets on what was Rafa's B-list - Diego Forlan. As far as Torres being at Anfield today - well it seems strange that the club would take a risk on allowing Torres to be seen at Anfield considering he's still not officially a confirmed target, but the story is coming from reputable sources. Things certainly seem much more hopeful than they did just a couple of weeks ago.

Let's not start sucking eachothers dicks just yet.

I'm taking nothing for granted until the players have actually arrived.

Some have been digging graves for a month now on the same type of "Rafa won't get cash"-info, so you shouldn't 'get down' on the few who're flapping their cock around on this (equally?) reliable info.

Someone is wrong.

Torres is supposedly seen at Anfield, the Atletico chairman says El Nino is on holiday. I know who I believe, and it's not the Atletico chairman. Unless of course, the Albert Dock is Torres' holiday destination. Or perhaps he has been lured by the prospect of the city's ruins (the pit.)

I think this deal is nearly done. That article that coop posted was very interesting if there is an £18 million clause in particular. If that little ditty is true I honestly believe that this will be boxed off shortly.

I have heard about his release clause dropping if they didnt qualify for Europe last week when our interest was first known.

If i can remember right he signed a contract last summer which lowered his release fee from £40 million to £27 million. Again its only rumour but the contract also lowered his fee to £18 million this summer if they never qualified for Europe.

If the lower fee is true then surely Cisse is valued at at least £6 million which means we have probably only offered about £8 million.

Torres forces issue over Anfield move

By SIMON JONES - More by this author »

Last updated at 22:24pm on 25th June 2007

Fernando Torres is ready to confront his Atletico Madrid bosses in an effort to break the deadlock over his proposed move to Liverpool.

The Spain striker fears he is being priced out of a place in Rafa Benitez's plans, after being made aware of the Liverpool manager's interest, and intends outlining his misgivings to president Enrique Cerezo.

Atletico's £27million asking price is proving a stumbling block, though Liverpool could find a way round it by including Djibril Cisse and Luis Garcia in part exchange.

Cisse's £8m valuation would significantly reduce Liverpool's financial outlay, while moving to La Liga may well appeal to the Anfield misfit after he recently bought a Spanish holiday home in Sitges.

Cerezo confirmed Liverpool were stalling over the price tag on Torres, saying: "We have not had any offers from them for the player."

What happens if Atletico qualify for the UEFA Cup via the Intertoto? Could this be one of the reasons they're stalling? In effect they're saying 'we're not out of Europe next season yet.' Otherwise if these clauses do actually exist, then they're pretty cut and dried and we would surely offer £18m.

lets be honest about this. a lot of fans on this site have slated us over the last few weeks, with many comments like 'we aren't good enough' and 'we need proper strikers' if we are so ordinary, then why the fuck would torres want to come here? why would any top player want to come here? henry certainly didn'twant to; he wanted to go to barcelona. surely all these top players want to go to glamour clubs and not us???

surely we just dont look attractive enough to top players?

by the way, i happen to think liverpool has a great team, with the ability to do much better than previous recent final league standings show.
