Typically City require less sprinting and less total ground covered from their defensive midfielder than we do, and Phillips can’t cope with that either.

Looking at what we have done so far I can understand why we aren't going after another number six.

 

I think the original plan this season would have been to add Szoboszlai and Mac Alister to Fabinho, Thiago, Jones and Henderson with Elliott and Bajcetic as options. We've replaced Fabinho with Endo, so we now want to find a Henderson replacement.

We have a number 8 who is the Henderson upgrade.

Szoboszlai is the Hendo replacement surely? He does everything Hendo used to, and then some.

Surely VVD and Gapko have some sort of inclining on Gravenberch .  Thaigo is gone next year and will only play 50% of the games this year . Jones the same . If he over 6 feet tall get him in

Actually reading this again it does kind of make sense. I reckon we’ll just use Elliott as Szoboszlai’s backup though. 
 

First choice of Mac Allister, Endo, Szoboszlai. Backup three of Jones, Bajcetic and Elliott. Thiago to pick up minutes in whatever role whenever he’s physically available. Gakpo or Trent as emergency options.

 

Not the midfield rebuild we wanted but should still be a big improvement on last year.

i think that is easy, putting aside caicedo was never signing for us anyway, they wanted a number 6 regardless of profile. so initially they went with what they think is the ideal profile for a new player. caicedo met that profile. clearly lavia was a 2nd option. when we ran out of those players, we still needed a number 6. in previous years, that would have been nobody as the club wouldn't gamble/compromise on the profile. this season it seems they have accepted we need a 6 no matter what (I assume because of the Fab sale), so a few days after failing to get the young fella, we go after the "less ideal" candidate, who just happens to be 100m less, but 9 years older. 

 

maybe we will go for a player who isn't a number 6, but to me there's no reason to suspect we'll get another 6. we are back where we always are - anyone else at this point is a bonus and if a deal comes up, we'll go for it. if it doesn't, we run with what we have. the one player we were desperate for, we now have. 

 

and it's quids in. we get fabs 3 year deal of 200k off the wage bill, along with his 40m, so a total of 70m. Shell 16m and 90k per week on a 4 year deal for endo, costing us a total of 34m. Klopp is happy because he was pretty much ready to shoot fab and fsg are happy because he costs less than the half the price for a year more.

Henderson was used in the 6 and the 8 role though. It makes sense for us to try and find another player capable of playing in both.

Yes, but I'm sure the original idea was to have all of those players alongside Henderson.

The most worrying thing to me is that there's zero links or even mentions about signing another centre back. 

 

I can see it being another season where we end up keeping Nat Phillips as the emergency option.
