Joe Gomez

My fucking heart when I saw the new thread. Thought he was poorly again.

In my unlearned and humblest of opinions, has to start the season with van dijk.

I know Matip was brilliant, but I think Gomez has the pace to get us out of a lot more difficult situations.

Should we start getting worried? I wanted Klopp to use this opportunity to get Gomez up to speed again, but unfortunately it doesn’t look like Klopp trusts him at the minute. I must say I can see why.

He's been a bit shit for a hot minute. Has to heighten his standards. We're not in development anymore, we're the finished article. He's got to be in line with that.

I thought he looked a lot better today than he has in other games recently.

still nowhere near where he was before his injury last year, and so still waits in the wings behind both Matip and Lovren right now though, but a positive step tonight, I thought.

I doubt he's fully recovered from what was a serious injury. Far too early to be worrying about him.

He was fantastic last season before the injury. He needs more games and he look good tonight at times, he's getting there.

He'd only one gaff tonight, his usual one of trying to win an impossible ball and getting it knocked around him, leaving him out of position. Needs games and his confidence could do with a boost.

He will need a big turnaround though as he's way below what we have in his centre half position. To be fair though, the Ox is looking a lot better so hopefully Gomez goes down a similar path.

He's 22-years-old and coming back from injury. He's shown more than enough already for us to keep the faith.

Lad is a real talent. Actually very good analysis on rte tonight showing the  combination of him and Trent causing him to be pulled way out of position. Some of his attempted recoveries illustrating he using his pace to bail himself out when he needs to be concentrating on his positioning.

While he's a talent our first team almost exclusively consists of proven players, including TAA. A lot of work needed to be put in by Gomez. It's saying something when we actually look more assured with Lovren there over Gomez.

Agree. Trying to think of another CB like him at young age with similar attributes who matured into a rock solid defender. Possibly Company when he first landed at city around 2010/2011.

One thing about Gomez that stands out is that he is rapidly quick.

but on the other hand the fact we see him doing a fair bit of sprinting per game (as opposed to virj) is possibly that he is having to run because he is usually in the wrong place.

i feel there is a great player there but he needs to master his reading of the game, sense of positioning and gain his experience on the pitch and not from the stands. Id actually trust him in a big game too where he has no choice but to be ‘switched on’ and feel the pressure from minute one. I think the lower, lesser games are counter productive as the switching off is more likely to happen when the ball is largely at the other end of the pitch.

risky but I’d play him ahead of lovren on sun

Possibly I know in the flesh he lightening over 20 to 30 yards. Must have been something about him that worried scouts in his early days that stopped a big move and as you are inferring the absolute finished article now.

Yea, the feeling on Van Dijk from Gronigen and at Celtic was he switched off every once in awhile and used his speed to make up for positional errors -- sounds familiar.

Van Dijk is a physical freak, maybe the most gifted in that aspect for a CB in the history of the sport. Gomez, while also very fast, is a lot less gifted. He can't rely on that to be great.

Not many are as strong as VvD -- Gomez is quicker though. So in terms of using that to make up for positioning it is very similar. Also Gomez seems to have picked up the switching off part that was an issue for VvD at his age.
