Gerrard: I would leave Anfield

5, 10, 20, 25 etc are fucking wedding anniversaries. Who the fuck celebrates them anyway?

We're talking about the club pushing this 16 year anniversary. The club made it a central theme pre match. The club even had an anniversary programme.

I dont think gerrard can be held responsible for that. The club made the 16th anniversary an issue because saturday's game was 16 years to the day that he made his debut and we had a home game that co incided with that.

Last season we were away at hull and that game was played on the 30th. We're hardly likely to produce an away 15th anniversary programme FFS.

Now, clearly you and some others dont see or prefer to ignore the correlation between a footballer playing for the same club in the PL continuously for 16 years when probably 98% of players dont stay 10 years at the same club and dont play continuously in the highest league.

As I said in a previous post, no sensible fan is saying the manager should pick his team based on 'anniversaries.'

If people think 16 years in those circumstances is a 'nothing number' or shouldnt be celebrated, that's up to them. I think its a fantastic achievement but we'll agree to disagree.

Oh, and why dont you stop being stupidly argumentative?

You are contradicting yourself with this post but you do finally get to the point near the end.

'Nobody is saying a player should be picked based on anniversaries.'

This is exactly what I,and others were saying to you.

Nope. That point was made clearly by myself well before then. The debate moved on to whether 16 years was or wasnt a 'nothing' anniversary for a player at one club.

You and a few others selectively concentrate on parts for your agendas.

But you continue to dress it up as you like. There's plenty of gullible people on the net who'll follow your lead.

Gerrard has been played in the wrong position.

He is, now, a third of the way through the season, being deployed in his correct position, further forward.

If he is to stay at Liverpool, that's where he needs to play.

End of.

No eulogies here.

That's pretty much it.

He's been far more effective in the team in the past few matches playing further forward and Lucas playing the holding role has made us a bit more solid.

I think if we had either sturridge available or a better striker up top Gerrard would have had 2/3 assists already.

He hasn't got the legs to play a free role in every game as he has shown for a while now. Yes as a rare starter and impact sub he is fantastic.

Look at Bascombe's hair. Jesus Christ!

It's awful. In fact, it's very similar to the haircut that Steven Gerrard had when he first broke into the team. I like to think, Gerard Houllier had Patrice Bergues drag Stevie to the barbers by the ear and force him to have a number 2 all over.

Exactly but up until about 3 games ago Rodgers was running him into the ground playing every game in a twat of a position that didn't suit him. Now he has deployed him further forward in a more suited position and starts fucking dropping him when his replacements in that position arnt a patch on him. It's as if he doesn't want to be proved he has been misusing Gerrard this and last year.

It worked last year because it's hard to attack when your playing against such an attacking force as we were last year, teams were worried about getting tore up by us but the fact we conceded 50 showed we were still weak in defence and at protecting the defence.

"They go into their final win-or-bust Champions League group game with Basle on Tuesday in the knowledge the mood of an entire season will be dictated by its outcome"

What a load of cack.

If anything it's the United/Arsenal games that will dictate the mood of our season.

It will be an historic result if us minnows manage to defeat the mighty Basel. The football world will be rocked to its foundations.

Chelsea got beat by them home and away last season and I'm fairly sure they beat them the season before that aswell.

They are a good team who ancellotti said are stronger then lfc right now, its a hard games especially considering they only need a draw.

Steven Gerrard still has lead role in familiar Liverpool tale What kind of central midfielders are others seeing at Anfield to convince them Steven Gerrard is so expendable? There is still nobody good enough to fill considerable boots

Has Bascombe actually seen his performances in central midfield this season? Gerrard's our best available forward at the moment and should be impacting the game high up the pitch, with his minutes managed enough to keep himself fresh enough to do so. Even Carragher said it after Palace.

It's taken Lucas to come in for him just to provide some form of protection to the defence because Gerrard doesn't. And going forward there's no point him executing his passing range from deep because the strikers don't move.

And there's only one man to blame for not addressing central midfield in the last few windows so just come out and say that rather than hiding behind smoke and mirrors. 225 million quid and his mate Brendan hasn't signed a decent midfielder. The hated Rafa got Mascherano and Alonso in, in addition to Sissoko so we were never weak in midfield until those players left and still haven't been replaced to this day.

That's striker, we only play with one; Balotelli and Lambert don't make runs. We do have a guy who runs a lot but he's shite and the manager doesn't like him.

I for one will be massively deflated if we go out - years of clawing to get back in it, only to limp out and consolidate our Europa League place for this year and next?

The deflation was Madrid at home. An utterly brainless performance (against a boss side but the game was there for them to score 6 or 7 if they bothered to try in the second half) and that was the realisation that we haven't got a hope in hell this season of competing at this level against the likes of Madrid, Bayern, Barca, Juventus, Chelsea, PSG, Atletico. We're only in with a shout of qualifying because Basle are an average side from a minnow league and Ludogorets are an average side from an even weaker league.

All we can do is try and get back in it next season and hope somehow the idiots who make the decisions at LFC can sign good players for once in the summer to give us a chance at this level if we can somehow fluke 4th or a Europa League win. Neither look likely.

Why dont you ask bascombe instead of asking me?

I don't have the expectations or buzz anymore to end up massively deflated by anything that happens for the rest of this season bar the odd rare exception like a cup final, the expectations are now low and anything good that happens this season will a nice surprise/bonus.

That's what this season has done, it's been a massive kick in the bollocks so far.

It would be nice to see one of those special nights against Basel but in the end it will mean very little as we haven't a hope in hell of getting past Bayern/Barca/Atletico/PSG next round, in 2005 although the squad wasn't great we still had 5 top class players in Carra, Hyypia, Hamann, Gerrard and Alonso, most at the peak of their powers, they were also men and leaders, not to forget the top class manager, we don't have anything of the sort right now.

Top 4 has to be the priority, it's a long shot but if it somehow happens and we do manage it then at least we will have a chance to put right some of the many wrongs (not that those in charge can be trusted, lessons will surely have been learned though, surely!), beating Basel and losing in the last 16 is pretty much meaningless in the big picture, without CL next season it's hard to see where we go from there, a golden chance was missed to push on or at the very least consolidate last summer, next summer without CL then what?

It is fucked up not to really give much of a shit about the CL after not being in it for so long but again that's what this season has done.

I'm getting fed up with the whole thing as well, sick of finishing 2nd then dropping back to mid table after a terrible transfer window when we desperately need to kick on. Evans did it, Ged did it, Rafa did it and now Rodgers. Last season was the first time i believed we could win the league and our future looked certain, one of the best players in the world playing for us, Sturridge on the verge of becoming world class and the talent of Coutinho and Sterling to back them up.

Now we've sold our genius and may as well of given the money to charity for all the use it's been. We've got Glen Johnson as first choice right back, Enrique getting games, Toure in the defence, Lucas in the midfield and Rickie fucking Lambert up front. Fuck it, i don't even care anymore.

That's a good post Fridge and I can't say you're wrong, but then again it's footba, so there's always a chance.

You take your 2 quickest players and play them up top. Make them watch vids of Sturridge and Suarex pulling defenses apart last season. Eat sleep and breathe it. To a point where they can act out, from memory the 5 best goals we scored last season. They do this without the ball every session.

You drill the defense. Man to man marking at every set piece and corner. You pick your men before the game starts, and stick with them unless they are subbed/injured etc

You put your goalkeeper into a boxing training program. Make him learn how to attack the ball and punch it hard enough to reach touch, every time. You make him go and train with a rugby kicker to improve his distance kicking. All week every week. His shot stopping is about good enough already.

You pick your enforcer for midfield and build around him. It's Can. So play him every game and when he runs out of puff, you bring on your back up enforcer. Someone who can actually tackle and then start an attack.

You make the team watch non-stop vids of last season. Every day. You take the team and have team building exercises away from the training ground.

We are in the CL now. Might as well give it a damned good go, and then/when we go out, you have some momentum for the climb for 4th. Fuck this malaise, fuck this depression. We can still be up for the fight. We can still do this.

Some cunts on here really do under appreciate what a talent Gerrard is. Even at his age, he would easily walk into many elite clubs across Europe and still our best player. This shit about not getting into a Napoli side, go and watch a Serie A match, where there is a lack of quality players and tell me, the second greatest player to pull on a red shirt, wouldn't make it into everyone of their line up.

Fuck, we ar going to miss him when he's gone yet it seems some twats on here can't wait for it to happen. I know we are lucky to have had him for all these years and I can only wish he stays for a few years more. Top guy, player, leader and captain.

Feels pretty much like his first season did where there was just nothing to get excited about. At least then we were used to being shit and it was more of a a genuine 'transition' under a new manager and we had just finished 8th. Last season got everyone's hopes up again only to have them ripped apart after wasting a fortune again and selling our best player.

The comparison to his first season regarding tomorrow would be Zenit at home. We were woeful and inept in the away game but had the chance to heroically turn it around in a big European night and nearly did. Had we done so you still knew we'd fall way short when up against a decent side in a later round (which Zenit weren't). The celebration of winning tomorrow is a financial one for earning more money because as soon as we draw a good side we'll get our arse handed to us.

It's a bit like the Roy Evans days where you knew we didn't have what it took in Europe even if we had the odd great night. Even Souness had Auxerre and Hodgson Napoli.
