Brilliant actor. His performance as Jeffrey Bernard was a comic masterpiece... A perfect union of character and actor.

Passing of a true legend, but it's hard to be sad. As Michael Parkinson said, he didn't leave much of life unlived.

I haven't seen that before. A comic gem. There wasn't much in the acting field that he couldn't do and do superbly.

That show is fantastic. I love the script, and O'Toole couldn't have been more perfect for the part. He and the writer were both friends with the fellow the character was based on, and many of the stories in it were based on real life. This one is a corker, about going on the piss with Denis Shaw, who played a load of tv and film villains in the 50's and 60's... The best thing about it is how you can tell how much fun O'Toole is having.

I used to drink at The Coach and Horses in Soho when I was living in London in 1990, and I got to know the landlord.

He told me a great story about how in years gone by O'Toole, Oliver Reed, Jeffrey Bernard and Richard Harris, among others of their acquaintance, used to come into the pub every Friday, get pissed and, after the inevitable lock-in, the place used to get pretty trashed.

Without fail, the landlord said, one of them would turn up on Monday morning and present him with a cheque for the damages.
