Which way should a toilet roll hang?

Having been visited by my father-in-law over the holidays, an odd thing occurred. Every time I used the bog, I noticed that the toilet roll was hanging the wrong way round. I kept changing it back. Speaking to my wife after he left she said that she had noticed and had done the same. I have no idea why he felt the need to adjust it, but it made me question my whole toilet roll belief system so I turn to the wise GF to either back me up or show me to be wrong.

 

Now the way I think it should hang is outwards as shown here:

 

 

But he always put it on with the edge facing inwards towards the wall.

I know I've already replied to this but it has been playing on my mind all day. It's a lame argument. You have to reach down a bit further - the width of a toilet roll - and that makes all the difference, does it? I'm not having that.
