Robbie Earle sacked by ITV for breaking World Cup ticket rules

By Ann Gripper, Mirror.co.uk 15/06/2010

Robbie Earle has been sacked by ITV after his World Cup tickets were found to have been used by a “third party” - believed to be female Dutch fans in orange mini-dresses.

An ITV investigation found tickets allocated to former Wimbledon player Earle, 45, had been passed on beyond the friends and family circle they were meant for.

ITV checked up on their ticket allocation after an ambush marketing row broke out at Holland's 2-0 win over Denmark yesterday.

A group of 36 young women, all wearing orange mini-dresses, were thrown out of the game and questioned by Fifa, who have accused them of wearing the outfits to promote a brand of beer which was not one of the official sponsors.

Some of the fans still had their tickets with them, and these are understood to be part of Earle's allocation.

It is another blow for ITV, whose coverage has been widely criticised since the tournament started on Friday. Earle had been a pundit with ITV since 2002.

An ITV spokesperson said: “Following claims by FIFA that official 2010 World Cup tickets may have been used for ambush marketing, ITV has reviewed its entire ticket allocation for the tournament.

“Immediate investigations indicated that a block of ITV tickets would appear to have been used for unauthorised purposes during the Holland v Denmark match.

“Further enquiries have revealed that a substantial number of tickets allocated to Robbie Earle for family and friends have been passed to a third party in breach of FIFA rules.

“As a result, Robbie Earle’s contract with ITV has been terminated with immediate effect.”

A spokesman for Earle's agent said there was no comment at this stage.

Just need Mark Bright to meet a Megalodon whilst out swimming and the World Cup could suddenly become more tolerable.

Normally I'd hope McCarthy would be swiming on the same stretch of water but he'd probably just bore the Megalodon to death before it had a chance to eat him. We need a deaf assassin.

ITV are obviously paying shit wages, forcing Earle to do this just to be able to eat. Still, one less smug cunt talking shite.
