Engine Remapping

Just bought something as a toy and it is a bit bonkers and has made me feel 19 all over again. Had it home an hour or so and already googling decals to stick on it. Like a nob.

Few mates and even the dealer who sold it to me said get it remapped and it will be blow your mind. It is already pretty hairy in a good way. Driving a slow car fast is much more fun than driving a fast car slow. Anyway anyone have any experience of this particularly with insurance in mind? Everyone has said don't bother informing them because if you smash it up they wont be able to read it anyway. Makes me nervous though. Advice appreciated.

Main dealers can read remaps in my experience. I’m not sure about the non main dealer repair places that insurers use. I know from experience of buying a used car that had been remapped and being told the warranty was void as a result. Not a happy experience.

This was bought from Arnold Clark. Nice wee car. I recon I can do the intermediate services myself. Not arsed about resale value. It is mine to run into the ground. But I will probably look after it better than my kids. Just a bit concerned if I  up the HP to silly levels (for this vehicle) I am going to get fucked.

You will invalidate your insurance unless you tell them. If you get stopped by the police you’ll be in a lot of trouble. You will also put the fuel consumption through the roof and break the gear box eventually. Finally remember the suspension and brakes weren’t designed for a more powerful car so they will be too weedy. Apart from that all good.

Never 'got' remapping; buying a car that has ben designed to tolerances by the best engineers in the word, then letting some some grease monkey fuck it all up? Work on the power-to-weight ratio instead by binning all the seats you won't be sitting in.

Obviously you know very little on the subject. Yes insurance can be invalidated that was part of my question. Most models in a vehicles range have the exact same engine gearbox brakes etc just tuned up to give it greater output this particular car is available in 150 165 and 190 hp. all the same engine and gearbox. Fuel consumption is actually improved as a result of remapping particularly in diesels. This is not a diesel but still expect an improvement. As for getting stopped by the cops unless they carry an engine diagnostic kit with them I think I would be OK.

I'm confused as to why they wouldn't release them from the factory like this and sell them as such economical runners

This is a Fiat Arbath. they do several different models. They are not going to design three different engines for the different models. They just have one engine tuned to different specs.

Anyone else struggling to masturbate to this thread?

I did all my masturbating over fast cars and bikes when I was a young man, not that I actually owned one, having a wife and kids and putting them first saw to that.

I'm 60 now and still waiting for my mid life crisis.

I’ve been thinking of getting mine done for the extra bhp and fuel economy. The difference in price from new between the 2 engine variants runs into thousands for what’s basically a remapping yet I’ve seen people say they’ve kicked off over the file economy and the dealers have done it as a gesture of goodwill.

It’s a grey area with insurance as it can be classed as modified but according to the ITK’s on the forums they reckon the chance of it ever being discovered is minimal.

Go for it

Thanks mate. I requested a quote of a specialist insurance bod with remapping intake and turbo upgrades. brakes and exhaust so will see what the difference is and if it is worth it. Its mental anyway plus I have a 3.0lt beemer which although faster doesn't seem like it. This has no 6th, sat nav, cruise control or tells you when to stop for a piss. Just a glorified gokart and great fun. Safer than a bike and no need to dress up to drive it like a bike. Cant ride a 1000cc Ducati in my slippers.

Scoff away. It is brilliant. Like a gokart from the fair only this does 140 mph. Best fun I've had driving for as long as i can remember and I've driven hundreds of different cars. Noone hates you like they do in the BMW. Today there was 4 or 5 people around it pointing, at Tesco. Its cute its lovely and it goes like stink. New exhaust, intake and turbo upgrade will push it to 200 hp. Mental.

Does your wife know you're putting pictures of her car on the internet?

My wife refuses to even look at it. She heard the exhaust rumble and wound up the window of the Audi. She recons its a mid life crisis. My kids think it is ace and bonkers and keep asking for lifts here and there to show off
