Gerrard to return?

Him training at Melwood wouldn't be the worst thing. Klopp can take a look at him without the pressure of signing him, then if he thinks he can do a job then maybe he can play over Christmas when there's a good run of games. Henderson is out, Allen is Allen, and Lucas is a booking away from a ban, however short that may be. Gerrard may even be able to take Rossiter under his wing for a couple of months without the pressure of being club captain and the responsibilities that come along with it.

Ultimately if Klopp thinks it's a good idea then why not? He'll be gone again by the middle of January so there's no pressure to play him every week, call upon him when needed. Didn't Arsenal do the same with Henry's last hurrah there?

A coach.

No way should he be thinking about playing again.

Doesn't appear to have the legs now, even for the fucking MLS.

Maybe not but I have complete faith in Klopp not making any sentimental decisions .

If he pulls on the shirt for us again then it will because the manager has thoroughly assessed him and thinks he can do a job. I think we all know even at this early stage Klopp doesn't respect reputations or carry passengers as Milner found out on Saturday.

Hope Stevie still has a few bullets left in the gun.

I disagree. hes 35 years old and has taken shit off them for years. Clearly the only way to shut them up is beat them how could we do that with 10 men when we re already losing. If can comes on and gets sent off after 40 seconds he wouldnt get any sympathy. I absolutely love gerrard but that was the stupidest thing he did in a red shirt. Ahead of punching a DJ when we re top of the league and sticking up for wayne rooney live on tv against mancini. Imagine what fergie would ve done if rooney stuck up for gerrard like that.

After reading that nonsense I am more than happy to disagree.

Echo article -

Jurgen Klopp has invited Steven Gerrard to train with the Liverpool FC squad over the next two months – but a playing return for the Kop legend is highly unlikely.

Gerrard has flown home to the UK after his first season in Major League Soccer for LA Galaxy ended in heartache with their play-off defeat to Seattle Sounders.

The 35-year-old midfielder will spend November and December on Merseyside with his family and he’s expected to use Melwood’s facilities to maintain his fitness levels.

During a recent conversation when Gerrard called Klopp to wish him good luck in his new job, the manager confirmed that the offer to train with the Reds – initially made by former boss Brendan Rodgers – still stood.

Klopp is expected to meet Gerrard for the first time to discuss it further during the upcoming international break.

However, the ECHO understands there have been no talks about the possibility of Gerrard returning to Liverpool in a playing capacity.

Galaxy boss Bruce Arena has already ruled out the possibility of Gerrard re-signing for the Reds on loan during the January transfer window.

Gerrard is expected to report back for pre-season training in California on January 15.

Klopp has admired Gerrard from afar throughout his glittering career and believes having him back around Melwood would have a positive impact on his squad.

However, even if the German coach did want him to pull on the red shirt again trying to broker a deal would be hugely problematic.

The former Liverpool captain still has a year remaining on the 18-month deal he signed with Galaxy and the MLS outfit expect him to honour it.

Any attempt to release Gerrard from that contract would involve a significant transfer fee.

Gerrard has already indicated that he intends to hang up his boots at the end of the 2016 MLS season when he will be 36.

“It could be my last season as a footballer,” he said. “I’d love to go out on a high.”

Gerrard, who is expected to attend Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday, scored twice in 14 appearances for Galaxy after joining them in July.

He has made no secret of his desire to serve the Reds again and the possibility of a coaching role in future was discussed with chairman Tom Werner before his emotional farewell back in May.

More likely than a playing return for Gerrard is the prospect of him joining Klopp’s backroom staff once he has honoured his commitments in the States next year. He has been working towards obtaining his UEFA B licence.

Werner told the ECHO in May that Gerrard would always have a place at Liverpool – a club he served for 27 years having first joined the youth set-up at the age of eight.

“I don’t see this as goodbye,” Werner said. “I just see this as the end of a remarkable chapter for Steven in terms of his career at Liverpool.

“I’m very hopeful that Steven will return to the club in another role at some stage in the future and his great association with Liverpool will continue.

“It’s true that I’ve spoken to Steven about coming back. We’ve had some discussions which will remain private but we certainly see him as having an important place in the club’s future.

“It’s the values he brings to the club. His dedication and commitment to seeing the club succeed. We want to tap into that.”

I like Werner's quote in bold above. If Stevie is to come back it should be as part of the coaching set up and obviously, only if Klopp wants that.

A new team is trying to emerge. Klopp will add his own players in due course. Stevie should not be part of the playing side, in my view. Legend, one of the very best of all time, but not the player we need now.

Im still sore at Gerrard for coming on in the match against Man Utd and getting sent off right away, after which the wheels fell off that season.

That season was fucked either way. For you to hold that against him and ignore all his achievements here is ridiculous. In fact, it's absolute bollocks.

Actually, if that article is accurate then it's a brilliant move.

When the papers first started blathering about bringing back Gerrard as a player, I was a bit worried that we might really do that.  But if it's just to train at Melwood, then I actually think that could be quite good.  Let him just be around the younger lads training, putting in a word now and again.  It would be even better if he were over at the academy once a week.  Imagine the boost you'd get if you're Dhanda or Alexander-Arnold and Gerrard comes up to you after a drill and tells you you're doing well.

I'd hate to see him anywhere near our first team as a player, or even as a coach unless he's gone elsewhere and proven himself first, but as a consultant/occasional appearance at the academy I think it would be brilliant.
