Exclusive: Carragher concerned over midfield balance

Carragher was a great defender here, but I've got no time for him as a pundit. It especially irritates me that if you go looking for Liverpool news - like how long somebody is injured for or transfers - Carragher's opinion is always present.

If Carra speaks, I listen.

An odd post, Kevin.

One rookie winger when he wants to play 4-3-3 which needs at least two top quality wingers in the starting eleven.

Lucas the only defensive midfielder when the formation requires a top notch one to make it work.

Four strikers when you only need one.

Three number 10s when you don't need any.

Maybe time to stop playing 4-3-3

Are you suggesting we should have known Sterling was off and had a replacement ready, much the same way as we knew Suarez was going and had a ready rpeplacement ready? Forward planning? From the club that ran out of Champions League winners' shirts??

I didn't get all the friendly press the club was getting pre-season about buying well because we bought early, or because Rodgers got control over most of the budget. He had half the budget last year and bought shite for all the wrong positions with his selections then. Lallana when we had Coutinho, Lovren when we had Sakho, Lambert for Aspas, what did that improve?

When we hadn't spent as much this summer, I expected some late transfer dealings to give us wide midfield options to provide the ammunition for Benteke, players that fit all the formations other than the narrow diamond. Instead we never attempt to replace Sterling and we're left with a single wide player, a youngster who Rodgers dropped at the end of last season for being ineffective. Now we look desperate for Henderson to return from injury and hoping that one of the second striker options proves fit or able, which none so far have.

What even happens when henderton is back hes captain but on merit shouldnt really get in the side, with milner and can in a three you need lucas holding, if a two then milner and can is surely a more effective potential partnership as a two, as an opponent id rather face hendo than can.

Its all a much of muchness though, a very odd squad we have too many similar types. Youd think if can cant get in our side then maybe hes not that good, its sahin all over again a lumbering lump pissing in the wind at protecting our defence in sahins case because he was slow in cans case because hes not really a dm being pantomimed by opposition AMs as the crowd shout hes behind you.

I said at the time that I thought we were repeating many of the mistakes of last summer, but to be fair, comparatively speaking it was a better window. We haven't addressed some of the most obvious holes in the squad, but we've at least bought players who look ready for the first team.

The squad is now what the manager wants: No top class DM, no proper wingers, reliant on interchangeable CMs, and number 10s and CFs acting as part of a front three.

As much as I don't rate the shape of this squad, allowing the manager to have a freer hand means there should be no excuses this season. He either makes it work or moves on. Or we get new coaches before 2016/17.

Firminho is the new markovich who we signed to replace lallana who was signed to replace coutinho who didnt need replacing. Ibe is the new sterling who we signed to replace sterling as our replacement summer departure going forward, planning ahead, rodgers is already scouting for firminhos replacement as you can never have enough central Attacking Mids backed up by jobbing centre mids who have no specialties or real talents, a few roaming full backs who cant defend and centre backs and a goalkeeper who arent good at kicking the ball. Oh and just for a laugh spearheaded by a player who needs crosses to thrive, put ibe on the bench or at right wing back just to wind him up.

I don't mind Firmino, because it means we can play a 4321, with a two behind a striker from Lallana, Firmino, and Coutinho.

But they have to get close to Benteke, or Sturridge.

I'd like to see a midfield three of Henderson, Milner, and Ibe.

And I'd like to see Gomez and Sakho as our CB's, with Clyne and Moreno as full backs.

------------------Mignolet-------------------

Clyne-------Gomez----------Sakho------Moreno

Ibe---------------Milner-----------Henderson

--------Coutinho---------Firmino-------------

-----------------Benteke----------------------

Subs; Sturridge, Skrtel, Lallana, Allen, Rossiter, Can, Bogdan

Ibe in a midfeild three? Wtf thats not even a formation, have you just wrote the names down and thrun them on the floor?

Who is crossing to benteke? Why no sturridge? Aaaahh, can can get in the germany team but cant get in our team. Moreno is a slashed gash rash monster mash flash tash on the lash and should not be 'linking up' with henderson on the left. Make it stop.

Friendly press? It's the British press' way, build them up to knock them down. Bollocks to it.

                Mig

Clyne Skrtel Sakho Moreno

                Can

    Miner            Henderson

             Coutinho

       Sturridge Benteke

For me that is the only formation that can turn things around.

Firmino will have to accept the bench. Lallana is 3rd choice for the tip of the diamond. If Sturridge breaks again then just play Ings or Origi. Lovren out.

Same team for me. Probably Lucas in for Can against better sides.
