City 3 Liverpool 2

Toni Gomes pulls a goal back after a good cross from Liam Millar on the right.

Started from Curtis Jones winning the ball back over on the left hand side. The ball is worked wide right to Millar, and his cross is met by Toni Gomes at the far post.

Full time - City 3 Liverpool 2

The result flatters the home side. We were the better side throughout.

Back to back defeats for the 23s though.

The lack of depth defensively certainly didn't help things tonight with Parker playing at right back and then subsequently going off injured in the first half.

The Harlem Globetrotters think that team might not have enough at the defensive end.

More seriously, it's great to see Ejaria back, but he and Kane haven't worked out a stable partnership in central midfield yet.

Looks like the 23s are down to the bare bones at the moment. The outfield lads on the bench were all unused subs for the 18s yesterday.

Liverpool 1 Charlton 0

Bobby Adekanye gets on the end of a Yan Dhanda cross to put us 1-0 up.

Good play by Ejaria in the middle of the park found Dhanda down the right, who got his head up and crossed to the back post to find his fellow wingback, Adekanye, who done just enough to force the ball over the line despite the best efforts of the visiting keeper.

Liverpool 2 Charlton 0

Herbie Kane finds Bobby Adekanye to double the lead.

Bit of scrappy play just outside the Charlton box sees Kane pick up the ball around 30 yards out, he moves toward the right side of the pitch and then pings a lovely cross to the far post where Bobby Adekanye is on hand to head home.

Half time - Liverpool 2 Charlton 1

Deserved lead going into the break, shame to have conceded just before the whistle.

Their keeper has made a couple of good saves, and Toni Gomes has hit the post.

It does seem like the visitors are more interested in kicking Harry Wilson than much else, as 3 of their players have been booked for fouls on the 23's skipper today, including both centre backs.

Liverpool 3 Charlton 1

Kane finds Toni Gomes to restore the 2 goal advantage.

Charlton's turn to overplay at the back, as a slack square pass is seized upon by Wilson. Harry picks out Kane in the box, and as he's closed down by defenders and keeper, rolls a square pass to the grateful Gomes who taps home.

Liverpool 4 Charlton 1

Juanma's long ball through the middle sets Wilson away to dink over the onrushing keeper.

The visitors had worked the ball toward our penalty area, but we were able to win the ball back on the left. The ball was passed back to Juanma who just put his left foot through the clearance. The away side were defending high up the park and were caught out by the clearance, allowing Wilson to ghost in behind the 2 centre backs and finish smartly.

Liverpool 4 Charlton 1

Comfortable win for the lads today. We took our foot of the gas somewhat after the 4th goal, though did force the visiting keeper to make another couple of good saves. Kelleher at the other end made a couple of good saves too to restrict the visitors to just the first half goal.

Herbie Kane was excellent in the middle of the park, with Adekanye, Ejaria & Wilson also very good on the ball today.

The lads at the back were relatively untroubled, with Johnston the pick of the 3 centre backs for me.

Match report: U23s put four past Charlton in Premier League Cup

Liverpool U23s boosted their hopes of qualification to the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup with a 4-1 win over Charlton Athletic on Sunday, writes Chris Smith.
The young Reds controlled the Group G tie at Chester FC for long periods and took the points courtesy of Bobby Adekanye’s first-half brace and goals after the break from Toni Gomes and Harry Wilson. Victory increased Neil Critchley’s side’s points tally to seven in the section, with trips to Bristol City and Stoke City ahead of them next month.

After the opening 10 minutes passed by with little action of note, Liverpool seized control of the game en route to going in front. Gomes sent a header onto the outside of the left post from Adekanye’s cross before Yan Dhanda’s drive was repelled by Charlton goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer. The ever-influential Wilson almost put one on a plate for Adekanye after completing a rapid one-two with Dhanda and sweeping the ball towards the back post, but the No.11 could not convert.
However the former Barcelona forward did break the deadlock in the 19th minute. A similar move began with Ovie Ejaria sending a pass out to the right for Dhanda, who served a fine assist across the area for Adekanye to make amends from close range. Herbie Kane blasted a brilliant effort from 25 yards that was destined for the top corner until Maynard-Brewer clawed it clear, while Brandon Hanlan reminded the Reds that their lead was slender when he ran through and swerved a curler just off target, until the cushion Liverpool deserved was reflected in the scoreline on 39 minutes.
Kane picked out Adekanye with an excellent diagonal delivery from outside the box and the winger met the cross with a coolly-taken header back past the ‘keeper into the bottom corner.
Maynard-Brewer was at full stretch to palm out another angled Dhanda effort in the closing stages of the first half – and there was still time for the visitors to halve their deficit in stoppage-time. Charlton stole possession at the edge of the Liverpool area and Louis-Michel Yamfam sped into shooting territory and dragged a finish beyond Caoimhin Kelleher.
Any hopes the young Addicks had of mounting a comeback were put to bed when the Reds grabbed a quickfire double early in the second half, however.Wilson’s hard pressing in the opposition half forced an error that allowed Kane to lure out the ‘keeper and roll the ball square to Gomes for a straightforward strike into an open net. And on 53 minutes it was four. Wilson raced onto a long pass over the Charlton defence and when Maynard-Brewer rushed out, the Welshman delicately lofted a finish home.
A deluge of rain did not deter either side from pressing for goals. Gomes worked Maynard-Brewer at one end, while Terrique Anderson pulled a low hit wide on the counter and then had a strong shot punched away by Kelleher at the other. But the day’s scoring was done, and Liverpool’s Premier League Cup ambitions received a timely boost with two games left to play in the group.

Liverpool U23s: Kelleher, Masterson, Juanma, Johnston, Alves (Longstaff, 33), Kane, Dhanda, Ejaria, Gomes, Wilson, Adekanye.

Unused substitutes: Sharif, Grabara, Glennon.

Liverpool U18s claimed a 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Academy on Tuesday afternoon, writes David Lynch.

With Steven Gerrard's assistant Tom Culshaw taking charge, the young Reds ensured a quick return to winning ways after Saturday's disappointing defeat to Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup.

Glen McAuley's first-half spot-kick and a goal from Leighton Clarkson, which came in response to a late Leipzig equaliser, proved decisive for the hosts, who were good value for their win.

Liverpool made a bright start to proceedings, with McAuley coming inches from carving out a lead from Yasser Larouci's cross just 13 minutes in.

The Irishman came close again soon after, when his goal-bound shot was kept out against the odds after a pull-back from defender Jack Walls.

But he wouldn't be denied a third time, and coolly dispatched a penalty by sending the 'keeper the wrong way five minutes before the break after Niall Brookwell had been downed in the box.

The Reds continued to control matters in a second half that saw Harvey Whyte make his first appearance after a year out with injury but, having failed to make the most of their chances, they were hit by a sucker punch in the 74th minute.

A mistake at the back allowed Noah Holm in on goal, and the Norwegian forward made no mistake with his finish to level things up.

The hosts hit the bar through Anthony Glennon's header from a Larouci free-kick immediately after, but there was still time to clinch the win.

The winning goal came seven minutes from the end of normal time as Larouci picked out Clarkson, who showed great composure to slot the ball home after a clever run.

Liverpool U18s: Atherton (B. Williams, 45), Walls (Sharif, 45), Glennon, R. Williams, Savage, Clarkson (Whyte, 45), Longstaff (Clarkson, 65), Brookwell, McAuley (O'Rourke, 65), Cain, Larouci.
