1. Cole - looked as sprightly as in previous European rounds, and chipped in with a (very) early goal. Caused Steaua problems by running at them all night.

2. Spearing - very tidy display and looked cool and composed against mobile opponents. Should have tried a shot in the second half instead of the killer ball as he was well placed.

3. Meireles - very composed home debut, and sat in allowing Spearing to move forward more, until they reversed roles near the end. More right-footed than I remember.

Honourable mentions for Babel and Maxi too, particularly Maxi for the way he subtly started inside their left back for the second half, becoming a much more direct threat. Babel worked his arse off all night and looked up for it. Kelly also grew into the game as the second half wore on, and Konchesky, Kyrgiakos and Agger were steady throughout. The only real error was Kelly's where he either had to stay goal-side of the runner or play an offside using Krygiakos. Kyrgiakos for his part was a little slow in stepping out, so got caught for pace.

I have to admit, 2 goals aside, Ngog was disappointingly peripheral to proceedings. That said, if he can be as clinical with few chances, he will really become useful. He has clearly done a lot of strength work this summer, but still needs a little more to prevent beng outmuscled so often.
