Paul Scharner is set for talks with Liverpool next week over a possible free transfer to Merseyside.

New Reds boss Roy Hodgson is thought to be an admirer of the versatile 30-year-old, who left Wigan after his contract expired at the end of last season.

Hodgson tried to sign the Austrian on three occasions when manager of Fulham, but failed in each attempt.

It was also thought that the 62-year-old was trying to secure his signature at Craven Cottage before moving to Anfield at the start of July.

Aston Villa and Sunderland are also rumoured to be interested in landing Scharner's signature, but Liverpool is believed to be his preferred destination.

If the deal is to be successful, Scharner could possibly fill the void left by defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano should the Argentine depart.

"Roy Hodgson and Paul Scharner - this is a special relationship," said Scharner's agent, Valentin Hobel.

"Hodgson thinks that Paul's strengths in midfield are better than his attributes in central defence.

"Liverpool would be a dream, of course, but we are in contact with several clubs. Because he is a free transfer, he can choose."

Hmmm didn't see this one coming, but free and low wages, versatile and solid and a step up from Lucas. Can cover CB positions too.

Sell Lucas for £8m and Kerry Argos for £2m sign Scharner on a free.

Enables us to have £10m to spend elsewhere whilst having a player that can play in both their positions.

More like sell Lucas/The Greek/Whoever and have Scharner to replace him. Tom and George pocket the money.

Seriously? Lucas is better and far younger than Scharner, Kyrgiakos is important in our defence and was a rock last season, if anything sell on Skrtel, he'd raise much more cash.

So, with Jovanovic's signing on fee, and wages for his 3 year contract, and something similar for Scharner, that's the summer budget spent.

"Good squad player"

"Versatile"

"Decent in the air"

"Can do a job"

We have been padding out our squad with this sort of thing for years. Players who "can" do a job rather than players we actually need. We put them on 3-4 year contracts at £30k per week, and struggle to get rid of them when we realise thay are out of their depth. No personal slight on Scharner, but he ain't what we need.
