He gets knocked down

But he gets up again

We'll never see Aquilani now

Pissing the league away, pissing the league away

He makes a sideways pass, he makes a backwards pass,

He makes a sideways pass, he makes a backwards pass

He makes Reds fans wistful for Alonso

And he does the fucking head in of Galonso

I'm sure someone could better.

Nick, Lucas may not be the next Zidane but what I saw yesterday was someone standing up to a physical Evertonian midfield. A midfield that was hell bent on fouling our midfielders in the hope of getting back into the game. And the twat of the referee was allowing it to happen whole game long.

Lucas didn't hide though, he took everything that came his way and still was determined to break the play, which he is pretty decent at.

I don't have a fucking clue how screech escaped without a yellow card. Still, Lucas stood like a man and fighted until the end.

As I said, he may be an average footballer but you have to at least give him credit for trying his best out there. It may not be good enough for us but fuck it, we are yet to see if Aquilani is any good for us or not.

Excellent post.

If someone like Sneijder is worth 14 million, than there is no way in hell that Lucas will fetch that much.

Well its all subjective aint it?

What about in a world were Anderson costs £17million? Nani £17 million. Fellaini £15 fucking million? Lucas worth a lot more than £14 million in that world!

Lucas is a work horse, a water carrier, a man for 'the dirty work', a grafter. One of those players that those that study the game often remark that 'all good teams need'.

And he is okay at that job; not great, not terrible.

No problem at all having a player of that ilk in the team. Our problem is that, in our current first 11, we already have a better version of one of those players standing 5 yards away from him for most of the game.

Until Benayoun came on (talking about Sunday here), we offered fuck all of what anybody of sound mind could consider creativity. Nothing. Aurelio can cross a ball, but he can't make the space to do that - he needs somebody else to pull players out of position. Kuyt is similar to Aurelio except his crossing isn't quite as good. Gerrard isn't fit and shouldn't be playing, and N'gog, well, as much as one admires his pluck, he's not the kind of striker that has opposition defenders looking at the team sheet and thinking 'fuck, what are going to do about HIM?' Unless you are Tony Hibbert, of course, but one assumes that young Tony thinks the same about every single player of every single team he ever plays against.

Except they might add that he shouldn't spill the water or carry it sideways quite so often.
and backwards.

Sorry its got to be one of Lucas or Mascher

I can understand Rafa's dilema here, Mascher will be gone by the summer and if he drops Lucas he risks having him kicking off and wanting to leave as well which would leave us very short of DM cover. However by not wishing to piss Lucas off he is probably pissing Aquaman off big style

Lucas is like a poor Robbie Savage. If Benitez has bought Robbie Savage, there would be lots of people on here praising him to the high heavens, saying 'Benitez has turned Savage into a world class player', as Savage would be turning in precisely the type of performance that Lucas does week in week out. In fact, Savage's performances were generally a lot better. A better tackler, a better passer, and would have more influence on a game.

Sometimes a bit of perspective is required.

I wouldn't mind if Lucas was the worst player we have starting regularly, but he isn't.

You do realise there are no actual 'facts' in that diatribe?

Lucas will never, ever, under any circumstances, given any amount of time, become a world class player.

Stop talking cod shite. You're embarassing yourself, mate. Honestly.

Haha, haven't heard that one in a while. I'm fine with making a tit of myself with this aswell, really.

Everyone here probably has at least one weird idea in their heads, many will keep it to themselves, etc. Mine is simply having a belief that Lucas will one day turn into a sound player. I totally get that it doesn't look likely at all right now and that it might never turn out to be true aswell. And no I won't rant on about it all the time, because if it actually happens it'll probably take a good few years anyway so there's no point.

About as good (sic) as Lucas for you then?

Would he be in your avatar if he were playing for us?

I suppose he's at about the same level of development as Lucas, yes. Why have you put sic in brackets?

As to whether he would be in my avatar, well, if he was a Liverpool player then possibly.

I'm not sure where you're going with this rather odd line of questioning. Is this cross examination?

Agreed. I just don't rate him. He has some technical ability but he's just not got a footballing brain what-so-ever. Always takes too long on the ball, and is forever being caught in possession.

I've said before that I think he'd be ace playing in Italy, where you tend to get a little bit more time on the ball.

Absolutely right. If he had some urgency about him, he'd look a lot better almost instantly. Xabi Alonso is pretty slow, but he moves the ball really quickly because he knows everything that's going on on the pitch and has made his mind up about what he'll do with the ball before he gets it. Lucas doesn't.

i think he is OK and could well get better, but i watched him on sunday quite closely and his lack of ability to go forward with the ball or look for anything more than a simple pass is infuriating. At the moment he is nothing more than a backup player in my mind. that's not to say he should be binned, but as soon as Rafa lets Aquilani play, sometime in the next couple of years, he should difinitely be the one to make way.

Agreed.

Agreed. I really do not recognise the players some people describe on here.

Have the standards we expect from our midfielders now dropped so low that we're willing to laud this awful example of a footballer

Awful example of a footballer? Behave lad. You might not think he's Liverpool quality but that's a pretty shite comment to make.
