It seems to be a time honoured tradition that England's attacking players turn to dog muck when representing their country. When they play for their clubs they are banging in goals from all angles just for the hell of it.

 

Only a handful of players seemed able to transfer their club abilities to the national team. Lineker, Beardsley and Shearer/Sheringham spring to mind.

Frankly the fact that he has narrowly swerved the fate of having to be crucified by the press and have mongs singing 'you let your country down' at him every week next season just makes me hate the whole Ingerlund thing even more....because that is what would have happened to the lad - yeah ok at least he isn't gonna have to have it but we all know how it would have been and i can't be happy for the people who would have subjected him to it.

This is the reality of penalty shootouts unfortunately. Luckily England won but any team that wants to avoid this kind of situation needs to be able to ensure they win it without the potential after-effects of a penalty shoot-out. As soon as a match finishes level after extra time, it's going to expose one of the players on either side to the effects of this.
