  1. 1. Are you a vegetarian?

    • Yes, meat is murder
    • No, I love meat me
    • I should consider it really
    • I have no intention of ever entertaining the idea

Good to know! Will try it shortly and report back. I'll probably say I loved it though, because hardly anything will deter me from loving chilli, obsessed with the stuff.

I don't really see the point in putting minced beef in chilli (or Bolognese) because once you've sauced it up, you can't even taste any beef.

Even anyone who is unmoved or unconvinced by the animal welfare, environmental and health arguments for vegetarianism should be able to look at the price difference between beef and Quorn next time they're making a chilli.

PS

I make a fucking beast of a chilli.  I go to town on it, with cumin, limes, honey... all kinds of swag.

Yeah my main thing at the moment is texture. I just get a bit bored of chewing on veg at times, some quorn mince/chicken, etc, would be a good change.

Is sota mince essentially just like quorn?

I prefer beef mince, and if I have people around I make chilli properly. Big hunk of meat that virtually evaporates into the sauce. If not, or I need a quick meal just for myself, I dice an onion, fry it off, add in a jar of chilli and a tin of tomatoes, bring it to the boil and add some quorn. Book for about 15 minutes. 2 minute rice or a packet of doritos and jobsagoddun. Not a patch in the real stuff, mind.

Soy mince is actually very good, though you do have to season and throw more flavours at it than you might with regular mince. It works very well with things like shepherd's pies, chilli con carne etc. Quorn uses egg to bind so if you don't eat eggs, avoid Quorn.

Exactly. Kidney beans plus other beans if you like, carrots, tomatoes, chillies, bit of magic. Can include mushies or courgettes or some other veg if you want. No need for weird fake meat in a veggie chilli.

It's just protein that is left behind when you extract soybean oil. Nothing weird or fake about it.

Missus is a veggie so I cook and eat a lot of vegetarian food. But never once have I decided that the world of veggie food is so sparse that I needed to add pretend meat. Do vegetarianism properly

It amuses me that there is a "proper" way to do vegetarianism, beyond not eating dead animals.

I'm not really sure what the objection to bean or mushroom protein shaped and spiced in a similar manner to meat products is supposed to be.

Same objection to meatless meat as to decaffeinated coffee and alcohol free beer. It's not proper, it's just processed, fake shit

But it's not "meatless meat". It's vegetable protein. Is there a rulebook somewhere that says burgers and sausages have to be made with meat protein alone?

As I say, I really can't understand these bizarre and illogical restrictions people try to create.
