I'm very confused after this. We should have had a penatly for the first handball and overall we played well. I can't blame the manager or even the defensive set up for that back pass. Ok it was a mistake. I've been highlighting all season the weaknesses of our defensive tactics, but I thought tonight we've handled them quite well. Reina also made a great save.

Then we score three goals and we are ready to finish them off having 30 minutes to do so. But immediately, Allen and Henderson are being substituted? how, why? Was that the right moment to launch the mysterious man Assaidi? From a whole season in the stands the last 30 minutes in the knock out stages of EL was the right time to bring him on?

Nonetheless I have to say Assaidi looked at least as good as Downing.

Good performance, but then again, we are the only English team to be eliminated at this stage.

I'm disappointed and confused.

The simple fact is if we defend correctly and don't gift the opposition a goal on an almost weekly basis by thoroughly avoidable errors then we'd have easily qualified from this tie and probably been atleast 10points better off in the league.

Scoring goals isn't our problem. Defending against them is.

Agree with that. Thought we were superb when we had the ball going forward, the midfield did a good job of getting the ball back when we lost it, but when Zenit had the ball near our goal, the back four looked lost and panicky. Pepe too to some degree. Why the back four saw it necessary to pass the ball around between themselves in our box with Zenit players pressing them is beyond me. Just inviting pressure. Just kick the fuckin thing up the field and get it away from our goal! Que sarcastic cheers from Anny Road end when Pepe finally did just that.

There was a LOT of good stuff tonight, really good stuff, but it is really basic, stupid errors that cost us. We don't lose as such...we self-destruct. That said, still gutted for Carra. Oh well, onwards and upwards!

The usual dubious tactics from BR and baffling substitutions. Players we hardly ever saw earlier in the season look good.

I loved this club before BR arrived, and i'll continue to love it after he's gone. I just hope Suarez doesn't follow him out of the door.

The subs were baffling

But the tactics were spot on......we won 3-1?!

Another fan who doesnt see the bigger picture.......this club doesnt need your kinda love

Close but not close enough in a memorable euro night. We spent the latter part of the afternoon drinking with some Zenit fans, and what top comrades they were. Hugely knowledgeable about football, port mentality, and with proud Socialist traditions, the very stuff of euro competition. Shirt scarf badge and memorabilia swapping, if we play them again accommodation and a good night out guaranteed.

Being knocked out from Europe is a crushing blow, but Rodgers will learn. Substituting two players when we had just scored the third was strange and lost us momentum. Shelvey looks out of place in the PL, in Europe he was at sea. and gave away a needless free kick and was booked pretty much as soon as he came on.

Downing was superb and Lucas sprayed long balls with a skill that Der Kaiser would have been proud of with Suarez always dangerous, not least with the dead ball. A valiant effort overall, but not quite good enough. The tie was lost in the first leg against a ring rusty Zenit side and our lack of defensive composure for Hulk’s goal put the tie pretty much out of reach. Reina’s decision making caused me the jitters.

Carra was at fault for the Zenit goal but was also part of a magnificent fight back in which every member of the team gave their all. Nonetheless being out of all cup competitions in February is not good enough for LFC, the easy route into the EL now shut down, instead we will have to qualify by league position, something that KK could not manage.

However sometimes you just savour the occasion, and last night epitomised for me the joys of European football, and how vital it is to the club and our fans.

I used to love my wife, but she's wearing a dress I don't like. I'll love her again when she gets changed.

(Negged, obviously.)

[Edit - All being well, Suarez will be well into his thirties when the manager goes out of the door, so it'd be no great shame to see him go.]

That's lovely stuff x.

Agree about Carragher, the mistake was a huge one, but the way he put it behind him is the sort of mental strength that so many of our players lack.

I applaud BRs bravery in the subs, and he's given Shelvey chance after chance now, and perhaps last night was the last straw. I very much doubt he'll be here next season.

Considering who was in available, there's cause for optimism, but we really desperately require a defensive overhaul.

Cheers yeah, that's the most fucked up part about the away goal rule. One team gets 30 more minutes to manage an away goal. I don't really see how that is fair.

I don't agree with away goals at all, I've said it for years. You can go from winning to losing in one goal. That's not really in keeping with the basic principle of football where all you can do when you're behind is equalise. Rules are rules though but I don't see the point of it. A draw's a draw
