Just started dipping my toes in the Odd Future stuff. Gutted because I went looking last week and they had all their mixtapes for free download on their site but I didn't have time to grab 'em. Benji B had them on his show this week and it prompted me to go back only to find they're now gone and they're pushing the new Tyler The Creator record for cash money. Some of their stuff is way out there, but some of it is fucking great (although I'm no expert - I haven't heard more than a few tracks of theirs and they've got loads of stuff out there; they're very prolific). They're certainly freshening hip hop right the fuck up, probably because they're so young (one of them is still at school, I believe).

Check out Frank Oceans mixtape nostalgia,ULTRA, one of the albums of the year so far.

Anyone heard about Elzhi (an underground MC who I have a lot of time for) making an Illmatic tribute album, called "elmatic"

Pretty good stuff if you ask me. Here are a couple of my favs off the album...

Surprised you call him underground mate; Slum Village were seminal. I downloaded Elmatic this week when it came out (on the 10th, I think) but I haven't really given it a proper go yet. Have you got Fashawn's tribute, Ode to Illmatic, too? That's available for free as well.

Just given it a once through and it's superb; the arrangements/productions are superb with loads of live instrumentation and orchestration. In fact I'm amazed he's giving this away for free, it's that good (unless he's got something better in the pipeline and this is merely a very lavish advert).

Yeah, been listening to the album pretty much all day. Love 'Life's a Bitch' when, at the end, there is a three minute jazz/soul instrumental that just makes me want to sit back and smoke a massive spliff. Quality album.

Also been listening to this guy's new album this week. I'm a big fan of Reks but I need to give the album a proper listen to before I can put my stamp of approval on it. Two songs that have already jumped out at me though (might have already posted them up on here at some point):

Also liking the new Heavy Metal Kings album, although it's very raw and "heavy" so it won't appeal to a lot of you guys. Still, this song is epic!

Slum Village is well underrated man! They have some fine tunes to bear but they have sure missed the magical J Dilla. Elzhi ain't bad to be fair.

Hey TOTK - some decent tunes on your sample there. I still feel the beats could do with a beat of work. Could be just my taste though.

PS: Haven't figured how to embed yet but one tune I've been giving a lot of time for lately is Guru's Moment of Truth (RIP). A lot of wisdom in the lyrics and the beats are vintage Premier.

Yeah, I suppose it's all about opinions mate, because I think England have some of the best producers at the moment (along with MC's). Check out Chemo's beats for example. Anyway, as I say, all about taste. I love Moment of Truth, too, such a beautiful song.

If you want to embed video's on youtube just take the text (in bold) at the end of the URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXCo_lR3Pp0

and then paste it on here (after wrapping it in the youtube tags at the top of the message box)

Viola!

You guys should check out this MC, he is a great freestyle rhymer (All off the top of his head). I have seen him live and he is simply amazing, at one point he started picking random objects out of the crowd and making up rhymes about them. Quality.

Rap legend Heavy D -- one of the most influential rappers of the '90s -- died earlier today ... TMZ has learned.

Heavy D -- real name Dwight Arrington Myers -- was rushed to an L.A. hospital around noon today ... and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1 PM. He was 44 years old.

We've learned a 911 call was placed from Heavy's Beverly Hills home around 11:25 AM to report an unconscious male on the walkway .

When help arrived, we're told Heavy D was conscious and speaking -- and was transported to a nearby hospital.

He died a short time later.

Cops are investigating the death -- and so far, there are no obvious signs of foul play. Police are currently at the home.
