I'd spend it on The Chief if it's true that £17m covers his transfer fee plus wages over 5 years. We should do the deal immediately if it's on the table.

Not quite as simple as you portray Paul as it's not a £17M outlay to buy him. I'd love a new striker but would be loathed to miss out on The Chief. We don't have the cash anyway so it's pointless.

The best we can hope for is The Chief, a CB and a few freebies.

If he gets shut of Riise, Crouch, Carson and Momo then it's whole different story.

Supporters always want more. It is in our nature. But the harsh reality appears to be one or the other. If that is indeed true, then it is obvious that the £17M would be better deployed on top attacking talent.

NB - if the £17M is frittered away on someone who, for whatever reason, doesn't deliver, then of course (with hindsight!) we'd all be kicking ourselves for letting Mascherano slip through the net. But on the face of it, we need a world class attacker who offers game winning ability when the opposition 'parks their bus in front of our goal' - which, incidentally, happens a good deal more than the odd occasion where Mascherano's particular skills help us to snuff out the likes of Kaka.

What about Diego?

If he was available for 17m would you sign him instead of Mascherano if we could only sign one?

No I wouldn't because it will leave noone in the midfield to allow players like Diego to do their stuff... it's a direct swap of two positions. I certainly don't trust any of our midfielders to do the job Mascherano does.
