Bascombe

Recommended Posts

Yet they have the same editorial policy, ethos, target the same audience and share cross promotional material and run joint competitions they are also facts.

It is also a fact that at one time an ex Liverpool player was absolutely crucified for writing an article in the NOTW. Between that time and now attitudes have changed I'm just pointing out that the attitude prevalent here was not always the case so something must have happened to change people's opinion.

As I say people look at it from opposing sides and never the twain shall meet.

Crucified by the very people who are lambasting Bascombe now? I hear what you're saying but it's about perspective surely?

I'm not going to castigate a decent red whose made a career choice whilst thousands of so called "Liverpool supporters" read the S*N at domestic and European aways, not to mention the fucktards you see on holiday.

Are we not going round in circles, the boycott is against the S*N, the HFSG have confirmed to TWO Liverpool players, when asked, that the NOTW isn't part of our boycott.

Kelvin bastard McKenzie is the focus of my anger, he was the editor of the rag NOT the NOTW, and the bastard is still at it now for God's sake. I applaud the people who have expressed their views in a frank and open way just as I applaud Bascombe for having the guts to do something for the good of his own self knowing full well he'd upset some people due to his last position.

People are very quick to judge somebody in the public eye whilst safe in knowledge that they’ll never be judged in a similar way.

Well put Andy

Thanks to Chris for his support and Stu I agree with a lot of your last post to me even if I did fuck up the quote:biggrin:

On a serious note CB isnt breaking the law taking the job offered to him but those of you doing drugs and porn are and Im not sitting in judgement on you either

If anyone has a go at CB they should be shamed of themselves for not getting the facts right. I see NOTW as the paper to buy if you're a S*n reader as its similar in numbness. I see its its Sunday version. I dont however see it as the S*n.

I dont know know CB therefore I shouldnt be judging his decision anyway.

It's hard to disagree with any of that really Drewy attitudes have definitely changed, and you're totally correct there are infinitely worse gobshites who follow us now, living near the ground you can't avoid them on match day.

HAHA totally know were you're coming from about holiday Reds cunts to a man.

If the NOTW is guilty by association, why isn't The Star castigated for actually printing the shite?

Because they published an apology straight away Paul as did other nationals who'd printed the lies. The Sun waited 16 years before Rebekah Wade made her "apology" which has in my opinion made the boycott permanent such was the anger and resentment it caused.

Surely the time has come to draw a line on this. Some people don't agree with him going, others don't mind. Personally, good luck to him. He's a big loss to sports journalism in this city and on the Echo. Go into a pub before a Sunday game and loads of our fans are reading the NOTW.

Just wish him luck and remember him for great lines as:

"Playing in the UEFA cup when you've always coverted the Champions' League is like pulling Danni Minogue when you've always fancied Kylie."

or something like that.

We've had a fair and balanced argument and at least we are not coming out with a ridiculous threats like other websites for so called fans. Someone on another site even threatened to "cut him". That's fucking ridiculous.

We'll miss him when he's gone. Good luck Bascombe.

Andy,

I don't think they spoke to the HJC Having exhanged swapped emails with one of the lads there they might have got a different view on dealing with the NotW (and one I fully support).

I don't touch that rag either Paul, however the did apologise. As I recall our own Daily Post had a very nasty piece just after the disaster...

Most of the text on the HJC site is lifted directly from-Hillsborough and After, The Liverpool Experience. First Report April 1990

by Shiela Coleman, Ann Jemphrey, Phil Scraton and Paula Skidmore

page 63.....covers the poor media coverage and reads as follows-------

One of the most unexpected reports....appeared 18.04.89 in the Daily Post in an article entitled I blame the Yobs......the article stated

"So it was at Hillsborough that the yobs made enough nuisance of themselves to convince the Police that so-called Gates of Hell were opened...the gatecrashers wreaked their fatal havoc. At best it was unfettered zeal. At the worst it was uncontrolled fanaticism and mass hysteria which literally squeezed the life out of men women and children.

This was yobbism at its most base. People without tickets who had no right to be there were crushing to death their fellow Scousers. When it comes to apportioning blame the accusatory finger can also be pointed at Liverpool. Scouse killed Scouse for no better reason that 22 men were kicking a ball."

It is particularly difficult to understand how a journalist working locally could have reached such a conclusion about the cause of the disaster. Of course the newspaper received many letters of complaint both about the inaccuracies and about the tone of the piece. Williams however stood 'be every word with no apology' as he stated in the headline of his second piece., which was written in response to the complaints. Not only did he repeat some of his original inaccuracies, such as fans forcing the police to allow them to pour in at the last minute which he stated was an incontrovertible fact but also persisted in the grossly offensive allegation about those who so thoughtlessly took lives away (Daily Post 25.04.89 titled I stand by every word, with no apology)

It appears that Williams was not in the habit of reading the newspaper for which he worked. Both the Post and Echo seven days before his second article had reported with care and attention to detail, the crucial failings in Police action outside the ground. For instance in one editorial piece the Echo asked some hard questions.

What sort of crowd control is it that allows numbers to build up to dangerous level and then throws open the gates into an already packed stadium?

In this and other careful analyses the local papers made it clear that hooliganism played no part in the crush outside the ground.

John Williams as with some of his national colleagues developed an analysis of the disaster firmly rooted in previously established prejudices about hooligan behaviour, in fact in his second piece his position was made clear by the comment 'such disasters and other examples of hooliganism'.

Clearly the 'incontrovertible fact' that Hillsborough was caused by yet more hooligan behaviour was firmly fixed in Williams mind. What is of most concern is that despite a large volume of complaints and clear evidence to the contrary Williams stood resolutely by his mis-conception.

Col,

They wouldn't speak to the HJC would they? I thought the club only recognised the HFSG?

By the way not many people get away with calling me a bird, think yourself priveliged mate!

I'd also speak to the HJC. As I recall Robbie (Motty) is associated with them.

Anyone who would "Cut Someone" for doing something that they don’t like shouldn’t be allowed out IMHO

The one thing about this forum is this

I believe people on here are very well rounded and on the whole a tolerant bunch (except for the wanker who called me an Odious Cunt a while back consider yourself told ) and if this subject can provoke such responses on here, then out on the street amongst the smack heads and the thieves one could only guess at. I would suggest CB's misgivings are well founded based on this

I now feel i have said all i want to on this subject

Speaking as a scouser, one thing that’s always pissed me off about the city is the holier-than-thou ‘honest working class folk hero’ shit that gets shoved down your throat, and the tendency toward cheap and empty soundbite sentimentality.

Anger and grief often displayed purely and simply for public consumption.

I think a lot of people out there reckon that shouting ‘Justice for the 96!’ when they’re surrounded by a crowd of people makes them a better scouser or a better red.

Keep to your principles by all means, and if someone is reading the S*n tell them the score, but a man’s life and career is nobody’s business but his own.

Here fuckin here. This does not just apply to this subject but many many others.

Basco's not in the wrong imo. The Notw is not the Sun no matter what way you want to dress it up. If somebody does you a bad turn, do you automaticaly have a vendetta against their sister? If he was going to work for the Sun then i'd have nothing but contempt for him, but he isn't so i don't.

Thats pretty much how I see it too. Good luck to Chris he was an outstanding Liverpool reporter to the extent that I personally only believed Liverpool news in the media if he put his name to it.

At what point do we move on from this

Would a full appology be enough?

Germans appologised for killing 6m jews and we now all get on again but it took some time.

So what would have to happen for it to be ok for someone to work at the devils paper?

What are you suggesting Nick? If you are saying what I think you're saying then you can just fuck off.

Simple question really

What needs to happen for somebody to be able to work for that paper without being villified for it.

Is it a full appology or more or will it never be under any circumstances be acceptable even if there was a full appology and a donation to the HJC.

I am interested to know what it would take especially from somebody like yourself who has problems with somebody working for its sister paper let alone the paper itself
