Same but it was quickly apparent he was happy to be a yes man and pick up a big wage. He wasn’t arsed.

Don't think Sven ever got them past the QFs. When you think of the talent of that generation, it's a massive underachievement.

Southgate is probably the second most successful England manager of all time.  Which maybe says a few things.

I thought he did OK with them but I didn't take that much notice in fairness

Looking back, Sven was quite overrated. His success at Lazio was as much down to the club spending obscene amounts of money as it was anything else. I think it's fair to say a better manager would probably have got more out of those England squads.

Capello just wasn't suited to managing international teams.

I was listening to a Ben Foster podcast recently and he said that the majority of the players didn't like him. 

He tried to run England the same way he'd run his club teams, but it doesn't work because you don't have ad much time or control over the players.

 

The newspapers are hinting that Southgate might step aside. I don't think there's any glaringly obvious replacements though?

I reckon England are roughly 8th to 10th in the world at any given time, so quarters is about right, and Southgate did well to get to a final and semi in previous efforts.

There’s no doubt that plenty of knobheads will always give it large aided and abetted by the media . As far as I could see the England team kept it quiet and certainly weren’t humbled but were beaten by a side who took their chances better.
