Liverpool's Hidden Gems

Does anyone know a rock pub in the city centre? I remember being in one in 2010 & it wasn't a million miles away from Liverpool Central but I can't seem to find it online, I think there may have been an upstairs.

I'm down on Saturday night & the Missus & I both enjoy a bit of Deep Purple & Steppenwolf after some nice tapas.

If they put Free Bird on there will be fucking problems though.

You will be wanting The Swan Inn. It is on Wood Street.

Go to Bier as well. It's near the Swan and has fantastic beer and usually decent music. They have very nice pies and all the bar staff seem to be in The Hummingbirds.

It's a toss up between heading up to The Lion & The Railway after eating or in the other direction to The Globe, Bier & The Swan.

If I try & do both, I'll lose valuable drinking time & nobody wants that.

Probably an age thing, but Mathew St is ace if your around my age, 45. The Grapes, a The Tube, Flanagans, Cavern. Much better than all the little scrotes snorting Coke & snarling at every fucker down the other end of Town, Concert Square etc.

I hate all that as well. I prefer places like Ship & Mitre myself. Matthew Street seems to be full of hen parties though. Fuck that.

To be fair, saying it's better than Concert Square is faint praise indeed, I've had better nights out in hospital than concert square.

Last time I went through Matthew Street it was full of Magaluf style PR wankers, horrendous scenes. Even the Japs don't go there no more.

"Alright mate, 3 free shots of sambucca with every bottle of Carlsberg, how does that grab you?"

"Not one bit."

I used to go to Matthew Street in my misspent youth ooh, 20 years ago. Anyway, something made me go back a couple of years ago, think I was on the hunt for some live music, and I actually really enjoyed it and have been back a few times since! No way would I go on a Friday or Saturday night, but up to teatime-ish or on a Sunday/weekday I'd happily go back as I really enjoy the casual nature of walking in the Cavern Club or Pub and seeing a live band in a good atmosphere, and at pretty much all times of the day.
