Hello everyone,

I'm studying musicology at the Humboldt University of Berlin and, as a football worshipper myself, I'm currently working on a thesis about terrace chants. The main topic will be the alleged impact of all-seater stadia on football chant culture, especially in Britain and at Anfield. In order to achieve this, I need your help.

I'd be very grateful if you were willing to share your opinions and memories. If you like, you can use the following questions as a guideline – however, you are not bound to do so. Your statements will be used for this thesis only, which will not be released to the public. Also, they will not be linked to your names.

- Since when have you been supporting Liverpool FC? Why this particular club?

- Did you watch matches at Anfield before the modification of the terraces? If so, do you think that the introduction of all-seater stadia have altered the chant culture there?

- Do you participate in any form of chant culture at Anfield? If so, why are you doing it?

Thank you very much for your time!

Have a nice day,

Marie

Many said the atmosphere at Anfield had declined already before the kop was made all seater. With the exception of the big matches and European ones it was pretty piss poor in the early 90’s.

As someone who only started going in the early 90s and standing on the kop from about 1992, (incidently the year we became shit and our worse season for about 30 years, ) Sheffield united at home, mark Walters scored I think, and Paul Stewart...um anyway, I don't have experience before that to say definitively.

There's loads of reasons why it's got shitter , all have been discussed at legnth on these boards already mate, do a google search for the threads.

I do 'participate in a form of chant culture’, or as its known non academically 'chant'.

I support this club because of Thomas Cooke, they have the best offers compared to others in the epl, and I can't get tix at old trafford.

It didn't really exist in Britain until the Kop started chanting LI-VER-POOL CLAP CLAP CLAP shortly after the same chant was heard by Brazil fans in the 1962 World Cup. The St John chant (later used for Toshack, Dalglish, Fowler, Suarez) started same season I believe.

The Kop also started amusing themselves in the long wait before kick off time by singing alternative versions of school yard songs, folk songs and particularly local band's songs. Terrace chanting and songs were born. Red and white scarves were held aloft in unison for the first time.

Fans of other clubs saw and heard this on t.v. and radio and started to copy so it spread through the UK by the mid 60's. Before they heard the Kop they were all still waving rattles including Everton.

That's the starting point

Defo' date=' those who would never of stood on the KOP now sit on it and act like they would of when they were sat elsewhere

The decline in working class match goers and increase in the middle and prawn sarnie brigades also means the chanting isn't what it should be[/quote']

Yeah, but who gives a fuck as long as you can take a picture of Gerrard taking a corner.

1. 1976. I was 6 and my Granda bought me a Liverpool scarf and my fate was sealed.

2. Yes. Before seating was brought in you used to simply file into the ground and make your way down towards your usual spec and stand with (mostly) the same group of people every home game. With all seater's you are regularly sat next to a complete stranger at every match; no cameraderie, no bond.

3. Yes, it's called "support". It a form of vocal socialism, a bond, a unity, a singular wave of faith. It's also enjoyable and occasionally very funny too.

4. Who would win a fight between a bear and a monkey with a knife ?

5. Pics or GTFO.
