Aston Villa step up their chase for Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa

Aston Villa are intensifying their efforts to sign Maynor Figueroa after clearing the way for Stephen Warnock to return to Liverpool on loan.

 

Warnock has fallen out of favour under Gerard Houllier at Villa Park and is considering an opportunity to solve Liverpool's left-back problem by rejoining them for the rest of the season.

 

While Houllier also likes Wigan striker Hugo Rodallega, his main target at the DW Stadium is attacking Honduran left back Figueroa.

 

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has tried to play down Villa's interest in two of his leading lights but faces an uphill task preventing Figueroa heading for the Midlands later this month.

 

Houllier, who is close to finalising a £6million deal for Lyon's Jean Makoun, is also lining up Montpellier's Bosnian centre half Emir Spahic.

 

The 30- year-old was a summer target for Arsenal but could join Villa next week in a £5m deal.

Taiwo is btter defensively than people give him credit for, he's solid enough at the back, he gets caught out of position at times, not like Glen but dunno what people are comparing with with Riise for, we haven't had anyone decent at left back since he left and paid the price for it. Taiwo is quick and strong though in recovery to negate that shortcoming which you are always going to get if you want a man who will offer something to the attack, something we are crying out for. A lot of people wanted Riise gone but there aren't/werent that many decent left backs out there and he was a pretty solid left back, good going forward, if wasteful at times and solid at the back when you go compere him to anyone we've put there since. I can't understand what people want from our left backs, you either want one competent iwhile specialising in attacking or defending or a balance betweeen the two. He's an upgrade on Konchesky, Burrows and Greame Le Saux. If Taiwo can come in and do just as well as Riise then we should be pretty fucking happy with ourselves, especially at that sort of price.

I agree with these sentiments. There were games last year which we could have drawn/won if it weren't for his mistakes. We might have finished in the top four even. :(

 

But hes great going forward and can shoot with both feet.

Warnock at lb and Kelly at rb is a better option than Johnson & Konchesky

 

but we do need to find a place for Johnson as well cos he is one of the better attacking players that we have

 

maybe he'll play on the right wing in the derby?

 

there were rumours of him starting there against Blackpool

 

tho having said that Figeuroa at lwb and Johnson at rwb would be a better formation than Warnock & Kelly in a flat back 4

He's giving some of the worst full back displays ive ever seen. This season at Anfield he was embarrassing.

Johnson has been as bad infact worse than Konchesky this season. I'd go as far to say Johnson has been the worst first choice rightback at our club in 35 years.

Arbeloa, Finnan, Babbel, McAteer,Jones, Nicol, Phil Neal, Johnson isn't fit to lace any of there boots, he can get forward that's it nothing else, £18m you couldn't make it up!!!!

How do we get rid? Stevie, Carra, Cole and Johnson are best mates. They tend to look after each other at the club as well. It is no secret that Stevie courted Johnson and Cole for us. Otherwise, Johnson would have joined Chelsea and Cole would have gone to Spurs. I personally feel that we lost superior players in Benayoun and Arbeloa by bringing in these two.

 

Merson and Johnson have a war going on but I agree with Merson on this. Merson suggested that Johnson should play right wing and there is nowt wrong with that.

His positional sense at left back is very poor and a lot of our golas conceded come form poor defending on his side of the pitch.

 

Pretty much how I feel, just don't rate him at all.

 

I haven't rated Warnock since he signed although was really pleased to get him because I thought he was much better than this.

He has shown appalling judgement in so many games now. I'd rather play Clark there for the time being.
