Since Phil Neal left, right-back has been an area where we haven't had much continuity. As a kid I was a huge fan of Rob Jones, and I know Ratboy would not have got nearly as many caps as he did if Trigger had managed to stay fit. Babbel was superb in the treble season, and it's so unfortunate he contracted GB which wrecked his career. Finnan was very solid and consistent and proved to be value for money. How about Steve Nicol? I know he was extremely versatile but in my early days as a fan he was the regular right-back and a superb player.

 

As Phil Neal (and Chris Lawler!) was before my time, I'm going with Nicol, followed by Jones, then Babbel.

Yeah, Steve Nicol for me also. I reckon most in and around my age (37) will say Nicol actually. His hattrick against Newcastle in 1987 stands out for me. Also, I wonder if anyone else remembers, but I remember seeing a picture of him in the late '80s wearing this massive fur cout when doing the chirstmas visit to Alder Hey. Fucking cracked me up.

I suppose it depends on what is "very young" to you. By 1985 Nicol had made the right back berth his own. I was 12 then so while I obviousely remember Neal well, Nicol was the main man during my time when I changed from a "All Liverpool players are Ace" view to a more adult "I'll asses them on their merits" view.

He was my favourite player as a kid, still love him. Can understand people being annoyed when he seemed to look for money to talk about Heysel, but he made peanuts compared to the players of the sky generation. I don't know what Glen Johnson gets paid a week but it's probably more than I get in 2 years. Fuck, I hate Glen Johnson.

Neal was wonderful. Anyone who plays in 5 European Cup Finals has to be. But I loved Nicol.
