We had a Women's Day thing at work where a few women talk about themselves.  One was one of the team leaders who is from Iran.  She reckoned that when she did her engineering degree in Iran it was 50/50 men and women on the course, then she moved to Australia to do a PhD and she was one of only two women in a department of 30.

Interesting cultural observation I thought.
