They were taken over by ESB about 18 months ago.  ESB are effectively the Irish government who ran an energy company.  They wanted a more dynamic brand who could adapt, change and disrupt the market quicker than a government run business and SO wanted cash to expand.  Charlie one of the founders is an ex energy trader so they were always on top of hedging but even so they would have been losing money on each customer.  It now looks like ESB have decided they can’t back those losses anymore so they’ve gone to market for cash.  Although it’s only £50m so they should be able to raise it - just depends on whether it’s equity or not.  They may have been impacted by changes to their metering costs due to their MAP choices but don’t think that would be fatal.

So have secured the finance they needed.  Looks like they should be able to get through the next couple of years.  A few senior managers have gone in recent weeks but much rosier outlook.

For the first time ever, US scientists at the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California successfully produced a nuclear fusion reaction resulting in a net energy gain.

The US Department of Energy is expected to officially announce the breakthrough Tuesday.

The result of the experiment would be a massive step in a decadeslong quest to unleash an infinite source of clean energy that could help end dependence on fossil fuels. Researchers for decades have attempted to recreate nuclear fusion – replicating the fusion that powers the sun.

US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm will make an announcement Tuesday on a “major scientific breakthrough,” the department announced Sunday. The breakthrough was first reported by the Financial Times.

My old boss is the CEO of Island Gas and is having to deal with the explosion in Jersey. She’s lovely and will be devastated by this (I know, not as much as the people who’ve died or lost relatives). No amount of money is worth that pressure.

Are you talking about Jo Cox by any chance?

I've just received this email.

Important: Your energy prices may have changed

On 24th November 2022, Ofgem (the energy regulator) announced an increase to the Energy Price Cap. This new cap will be effective from the 1st of January 2023 until the 31st of March 2023. We want to reassure you that you will continue to be protected by the Energy Price Guarantee which means your energy costs will remain below the new Energy Price Cap.

The Energy Price Guarantee: A Reminder

The Energy Price Guarantee limits how much you will pay for each unit of gas and electricity you use with a typical household paying around £2,500 per year.

Every household on a Standard Variable Tariff will receive the same Energy Price Guarantee discount from the Government. Some households may see a change in the price they pay for gas and electricity from January 2023 due to the method used by Ofgem when calculating the price cap. The price cap calculation will take into consideration regional and payment variations. This means where you live and how you pay for your energy will have an effect on your energy costs.

This Government support is saving households around £900 this winter. Your actual energy bill and savings could be higher or lower depending on the size of your home, how well it is insulated, how many people live there, and how much energy you use.

Remember: OTM will not ask for your bank or credit card details to apply the discount. Please be careful and report any scam messages that you receive to Action Fraud here, the reporting centre for fraud and cyber-crime in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, contact Police Scotland on 101.

From 1st April 2023 the Government support is expected to continue for a further 12 months where the average annual bill value is projected to increase to £3,000. Additional support continues to be available.

For more information about the Energy Price Guarantee please see our FAQs page.

The Energy Bill Support Scheme (EBSS)

The £400 discount provided through the EBSS scheme will continue until March 2023 and there will be no change in the way these payments are made to you.

For the remainder of this winter, up until March 2023, you will receive a £67 discount each month. You can expect to receive this discount as a refund to your bank account 5-7 days after a successful Direct Debit collection.

The discount will first show as a credit on your energy account, and then a debit – which is the discount being refunded to your bank account.

If your Direct Debit is lower than the £67 discount, you will receive a refund of your full Direct Debit value, and the remainder balance of the discount will remain as a credit on your energy account.

Direct Debits are based on an estimation of how much energy you may use over the next 12 months. We are unable to take the EBSS payment into account when setting your Direct Debit and will refund the EBSS discount back to your bank account.

All customers with an electricity supply will automatically receive the discount. You do not need to contact us or apply to receive this discount.

For more information please see our FAQs page.

It appears we may have to pay yet more if I'm reading this correctly.

Bit disappointed the beeb didn't ask for Rico and Dockers input here tbh...

The first woman saying she "feels more Yorkshire" now she's got a smart meter is a little bit off putting for me tbh. I can now understand why Dockers is so against them.

That’s the most banal article I’ve ever seen.   The whole idea is that you can (if you chose) monitor your usage.  If you don’t want to see it put the IHD in a drawer along with 66% of customers.

I’ve been speak to a a few Suppliers this week and they are all starting to see an increase in theft of energy.   There are people driving round estates offering to tamper with meters for £500.

This is never a good idea, the blokes doing it are generally cowboys who don’t know what they are doing and needless to say it’s incredibly dangerous.  If you see a domestic property go ‘bang’ there’s a very good chance someone has tried to mess with a gas meter and fires are often caused by electricity meters that have been bypassed.

On a lighter note they are also seeing an increase in the ‘Freeman of the Land’ defence.  Letters quoting Magna Carta and sometimes signed in blood.

The old coax method?
