I'm not sure this works with this lot. Bin Laden maybe, he had clear political goals and saw terrorism as a means to achieve them, but the ISIS mob are just batshit. Most of these people have criminal records or are otherwise just headcases.

The sad truth is there are people all around us, of all colours and religions and races, and all they need is the right circumstances and permissions to do heinous shit. 'British' police helped round up Jews when they 'rules' were changed about what was right and what was wrong. How many millions committed heinous acts for the Nazis? Former school teachers, policemen, cobblers, given a rifle and a uniform and  told they could brutalise whoever they wanted - and they did, with aplomb.
