If only we could operate with the benefit of hindsight and only sign players who we knew for a fact would prove to be successful, we'd never have to worry about overpaying.

That'd be ideal, but the second best scenario would be to avoid spending millions on proven mediocrity.

Im hoping there is something in these Hernandez rumours. I love how many of his goals come in the 6-10 yards from goal range. You've got to go back to Fowler the last time we had a great poacher. Too often the ball goes across goal and our forwards hsve dropped off to the penalty box. A good poacher is hard to find. Something special about a player that is just in the rigjt plsce at the rigjt time each and every week

What is Dimity Payet if not proven mediocrity? A 28 year old valued at £10m, who has never played for a top team, never won anything, never established himself in the French squad, not wanted by any of the 30 or so clubs he'd have rather moved to than West Ham, yet most on here would point to him as exactly the sort of player we should be signing (with hindsight, of course).

On the other hand, Man United have signed players of undisputed class such as Di Maria, Schweinsteiger, Kagawa, Depay, Falcao and Valdes and their performances have ranged from bang average to absolute shite, despite being exactly the sort that the TLW mob would happily bankrupt the club to sign (without hindsight, of course).

To be fair, it doesn't/didn't take a genius to predict that the likes of Andy Carroll, Adam Lallana, Christian Benteke and Mario Balotelli would do poorly here. You could pick a guy off the street to conduct transfers and he'd make better choices than those bums.

Yeah you don't see the old "You really think you could do better than the experts" line trotted out too much anymore.

Over the past few years I'd say theres a reasonable chance an obese 12 year old Football Manager fanatic could have had a better hit rate than our scouts.

I actually really look forward to a day in the distant future when I'll think to myself "Jesus, Liverpool have been doing well in the market these days!".

In my opinion you can never pay too much for good players and you can never pay too little for bad ones. Juve splashed out an inflation-adjusted £51M on Buffon in 2001. Absolute bargain for what he's given them. On the other had we have spent £83M on Carroll, Benteke and Balotelli who have cost us fuckloads of money and denied us massive opportunity cost.

Some truth in this.

For my money we should take whatever we had set aside for Teixeira and give it to Barca for ter Stegen.  The ter Stegen situation is like the Klopp thing - by some lucky accident of timing and something happening outside our control at another club, we're in the position where a world-class player/manager wants to come here.

If we wait until the summer, there is zero chance we get ter Stegen.  He's simply too good and eventually Barca will say "No, Bravo's not going to be here forever and we want a world-class player behind him."  But right now ter Stegen is upset about the club world cup thing and lack of playing time and seems like he might want to come.  We offered 10m, Barca said they want 23m ... so we should just say "You know what?  Here's the 23m, we'll take him."

It's like what we did with Klopp.  The owners must have thought "no chance he'll be interested" but then when they heard he was there's only one answer - "When can you start?"  23m for one of the best goalkeepers in world football is a snip.  He'd probably earn us 8 points per season over what Mignolet is doing, even if we didn't change another single player.  And he's 23 years old and could be here for a decade.

Or even just 2 years, and we could sell him back to Barca for twice what we paid when he demands to go back.  That wouldn't be ideal but it's miles better than just sitting here bidding aimlessly for Teixeira which isn't likely to happen and living with Mignolet for the next few seasons.

The point is, it seems like we have a chance to bring in a player that is genuinely world-class, and clubs in our current position don't get that chance very often.  Have to take it when you do.
