I gave Steve a call this morning to wish him a Happy Christmas.

I don't know why but I assumed he was an expat so the accent threw me a little but he's a top bloke and had me in stitches laughing. I don't want to steal Steve's thunder but I'm sure he won't mind me saying he's had a great day, had lots of visitors, a massive lunch and a few beers. He also spoke a lot about his day out with the overseas branch of TSOP and how his face hurt with laughter.

Steve, you are a legend mate. And speaking to you this morning made my Christmas.

Have a perv at the lovely asian nurse that transferred the call for me, she sounded top totty.

Some of you may be wondering how an Aussie born and bred became A Reds fan. I told the lads when they visited so I better tell the rest of you too. The first time I visited England we were heading for Manchester as I apparently had relatives from there in the seventeenth century. There were three OAPs sitting near us and as we were a ll drinking beer we soon became engaged in conversation with them. It emerged that they were from Liverpool and had been down to London for a match

Naturally, as soon as they learned our intended destination they gave us a complete rundown on Manchester :(shithole) and its residents (all cunts) and promptly persuaded us to change our destination to Liverpool.

Of course we we were as pissed as parrots by the time we arrived. And of course we were ready for more! They had us in stitches all the way to Liverpool and we didn't even give a thought to finding accomodation or really, why we were going there.

Once we arrived they took us to a club. I don't have much idea to this day where it was or what it was called even, just that it was the sort of neighbourhood club that we used to have here in Oz. It didn't look like much actually but our new friends were obviously well known there. I immediately headed for the bar but was elbowed out of the way by one of the OAPs. "Don't take his money, it's counterfeit!" hesaid to the barman as he got the drinks, and that was the theme for the rest of a very blurry night. They loudly informed the bar of the same "fact" and they just refused to allow us to buy a drink. They weren't trying to be flash or impress anyone and they obviously weren't wealthy. It was just that they had invited us as their guests and that was the way they did things, so we settled in for one of the better nights on the drink I've ever had. It was certainly one of the funniest, but it was more than that. We got on to the subject of politics and what fascinating blokes they were. They hated that cunt Thatcher with a passion for starters but they were pretty articulate on a wide range of subjects from the history of Liverpool to football tothe Labour Party and their betrayal of the dockers and miners, to the cuntishness of the Tories and the drinks kept coming and we still weren't allowed to pay for a single drink. We were introduced around and the rest of the pub was buying drinks for us as well! The club eventually closed up and we still went on drinking until we were ready to drop. It was fascinating...pick a subject and they could embarrass us with their knowledge but then we had to leave, in the middle of the night in a strange city with no accomodation booked. Not to worry said Bob, you can stay at my place and save some money. So off we wandered a few streets away, blind legless drunk, me and my bird, to sleep on a mattress on the floor. I can still remember all of us trying to make the bed and rolling around the floor and crashing into the furniture and falling over...we did a lot of that I seem to remember.    The next morning we had to rush to get a train so off we raced, grabbed some breakfast on the way and went about our travels. The whole night didn't cost us a penny. Our accomodation didn't cost us a penny and we had been royally entertained by some of the nicest, kindest and most interesting and generous bunches of people I've ever met.

I have encountered the same sort of hospitality here, but it was pretty uncommon even in the good old days. It was hospitality from an earlier time really. We had to repay them somehow (they threw the money I tried to give them on the ground!)so on the way back to London a week later we found the club eventually and left a hundred quid with the barman, (who remembered us) and scarpered before we were roped into another marathon drinking session. My bird reckoned it went straight into his pocket but  I just know it didn't, I just know. And I hope they had a good drink out of it.

But I've never forgotten them. I never forgot  that they offered complete strangers a bed and as much booze as we could drink and then more! I've never forgotten the laughs and it was just one of the best nights on the drink ever. Everyone we met was friendly, everyone bought us drinks and it was one of those times you know will never be repeated.Lovely lovely people.

I suppose with my British ancestry I had to be something of an Anglophile, but ever since then I've had a warm place in my heart for the city. Liverpool was being fucked over by the Tories well and truly back then and I've always been a fan of the underdog but it was the kindness and the humour that got me. That's what defines Liverpool for me. The residents have survived everything from the Luftwaffe to the the Tories and they've come back up and laughed. I admired it then and I admire it now, that through the hardest times they have survived and still retained that essential humanity.

Liverpool is truly a great city to me.  I worked in London for 6 months but London doesn't have it, that same spirit of generosity and welcoming. I haven't experienced it in any city in the world, certainly not Sydney either. So when I  was working in London and I had to choose a team to support  I just had to choose Liverpool didn't I?

I made the right choice.

Steve is to this forum what Olly Murs is to fat birds. Despite never having met him we all love him, and part of us hopes he may even love us too.

Like brothers and sisters.

It was great to meet on the phone Col, really great. I didn't expect much of Christmas to be honest...thought I wouldn't have the appetite for much food or beer. I only had a couple of beers but I enjoyed them hugely and I ate a fucking mountain of food. I ate more at lunch than I ate in the previous 3 days and that's no exaggeration.

Great story Steve, this city gets so much shit from uninformed and bigoted people, most of whom have probably never visited the city, stories like steve's and the occasion when the grand National was cancelled due to an IRA bomb scare and people from all over the country were stranded because they couldn't get to their cars, local people opened their homes and fed and put up total strangers, just normal, decent Scousers showing kindness and compassion to people who were stuck.

I always remember the kindness shown by ordinary Sheffield people after Hillsborough, I went with four mates in a car,and walking away from the ground up the hill, the amount of locals who were offering cups of tea,use of telephones ,toilets etc.was fantastic to see.I rang my mum from one guys home and he refused to take any money for the call, and he had a good few after my waiting to use the phone too

So you chose well Steve,I do believe liverpool people are unique in their kindness, sense of fairness and doing the right thing in times of adversity, would love to know what club you ended up in that day, sounded like a good place

Best wishes for the new year mate

I would like to add some stuff about how the disease has affected me and others, and how I feel about my imminent demise. Everything I thought I knew about how it would happen and how I would react has been turned upside down.  If my experience can help others approach that which everyone will eventually face then I believe I have an obligation as a human being to help. I'll get further into that soon...it's fucking hard to compose my thoughts sometimes and present them in some sort of coherent fashion. Dunno if it's the morphine or the effects of the disease as it goes to my brain. Maybe both together.

I want to do a daily post to relate the progress as best I can but they keep me busy in here, what with having physios, occupational therapists, social workers, nurse specialists, dieticians, regular nurses, visitors and doctors to deal with. Then there's self care, eating meals, being available for medications at the right time, showering. I'm (almost) too busy to think up lewd suggestions for the nurses and expose the bollocks surreptitiously. Fuck me, a man needs a personal assistant here!
