White Lies - to lose my life

I can't agree there sorry. I like the track of the same name but the rest is all a faux version of Joy Division/ Echo and the Bunnymen mixed with The Killers' commercial appeal. I get the impression the lyrics are dark for the sake of it, so I can't really believe a word of it.

I have never been a big one for lyrics "meaning" something. I prefer the music to the text. I can imagine if you are the type who gets moved by lyrics, then it might not have the same impact. To me it is an incredibly accomplished first album.

Imagine a nail being hit on the head, now double it (two nails being hit) and you're roughly in the right ball park.

I didn't mean to sound patronising by the way. Sometimes a lyric will tickle me and stay with me, but i rarely get moved by songs unless they are telling a story. The dubliners (i think) singing Kilkelly makes me weep as it reminds me of being away from most of my family and Johnny cash man in Black is one of the beautifulestest songs ever and brings a tear to my eye. But most times the lyrics are just a way of adding sound to the music. Take Sigur Ros for example. When you read the lyrics translated, you are like "what the fuck, jumping in puddles?". It sounded really deep in icelandic.

I can see what you mean, and I can enjoy songs which lyrics are nonsensical. However, I've always found that my absolute favourite artists or songs usually resonate on some personal level because I find the lyrics funny/moving/interesting or whatever else.

I went to see them lst night and they were excellent. The only downside is that the lack of material. they bascially played the whole album plus the new one, an old unreleased one and a cover of talking Heads "Heaven" (which was very good indeed). Death as the finale was fucking amazing.

That said, it was a cracking gig at a great venue, Berns Salonger in Stockholm

I seen them in Dublin a few weeks back and really enjoyed it. As RiS said, they do suffer because of their lack of material but that will change.

Death, Welcome to the Fairground and the last track off that album are all excellent songs. I do think they could go all strings with that final track too. I like a bit of orchestral interference me.
