Why spend £10 million on an area we don't need strengthening? Even if Alonso was to leave we could replace him, in the starting line up, with Lucas.

 

If we had a lot of money to spend, then fine, buy Barry. He's a good player and he'd do well here but I miss the point on spending £10 million when that money would be better spent on an area were we need strenthening more, like at full back or out wide.

I doubt he will be our left back, he's quite mobile in midfield, strong, committed, can drive forward when needed, I reckon he'd be superb at recycling in our formation and he has a decent shot on him too.

I don't think he is. He's got his way into the England side in centre midfield, I don't believe he'd move knowing he wasn't going to play there for his new club.

I don't think he's played left back for years. He started as a left back but moved to centre back and left midfield before playing as the central midfielder he is today.

 

I've no doubt he could play left back but why would we play him there when it's not his best position?

 

EDIT: I do think his versitility is part of what is attracting Rafa to him though.

He's rubbish at left back mate, go and look at any Villa forum, they'll say the same.

 

He was on the verge of being sold to Pompey a while back as he was average on the left but has moved in the middle and been class.
