Well people call footballers geniuses and results important too.

Surely more pretentious? Given music's huge cultural significance?

There are bands and artists that are important in the history of music, and some are important in terms of their effect on wider culture, hard to get away from that being a fact really.

I don't know why you bring the word genius into it. I didn't mention that.

Important in football can be contextualised. Important in the team, or important result in a competition, important in the context of XYZ. Music is not a competitive sport, I really don't understand the analogy.

Oh and negged for FF on the GF.

I think describing music as important is pretentious and embarrassing.

Some music is incredibly important to me. A lot of wonderful memories and events in my life are linked by certain pieces of music

Can't see how that is in the least bit pretentious or embarrassing.

Surely important in music can be contextualised too?

A record could be important in terms of it being a 'crossover' from underground to mainstream e.g., Your Love by Frankie Knuckles or Good Life by Inner City?.

A record could also be viewed as important due to its influence e.g., The Beatles' Revolver?

Well, if rules is rules.

There's not a lot to understand really. I'm pointing out how words are used in other contexts and why it isn't really pretentious to call music important. Sometimes it is in the context of musical relevance or influence and sometimes it is in the context of human history or wider culture.

You seem to be making a point about someone talking about a band that you wouldn't about an innings. When actually, despite both being fine uses of the word, the second is the most ridiculous really. Unless you think people are trying to claim the first Arctic monkeys album is important when compared to the polio vaccine; which is obviously daft.
