If you bring them down, then you've cost them an opportunity. If you handle a ball that would have been lost straight into their path, then you're not denying them an opportunity, you're giving them one.

Well in that case, defenders should start handballing the ball nicely into the path of attackers.

At least, the ensuing penalty has a chance of being missed or saved, rather than the gilt-edged opportunity that is being presented to the opposition with the handball.

There’s women and old men in my Labour Party group chat talking tactics like they watch footy all the time. I’ve had to mute it, it’s making my toes curl. 
 

If Spain don’t win then there should be murder over that penalty. The England keeper was at least a yard off her line when she saved it.
