Liverpool close to sealing £64 million deal for Benfica striker Darwin Núñez

Paul JoyceJune 11 2022, 6.00pm

Julian Ward, Liverpool’s director of football, has been in Portugal over the weekend to thrash out the transfer which could make the 22-year-old the most expensive player in the club’s history.

Ward has been holding talks with Rui Costa, the Benfica president, and Rui Pedro Braz, the sporting director, in an attempt to persuade the Portuguese club to lower their guaranteed asking price of €80 million and restructure add-ons of €20 million.

That is now on the cusp of being achieved with Núñez’s desire to play for Jürgen Klopp meaning an auction did not develop, with Manchester United having also been keen on the player.

Personal terms on a six-year contract will not be a problem and the fact that Núñez will not be one of the highest earners at the club is a reason why Liverpool will pay such a significant transfer fee.

The Sunday Times understands that Klopp and Van Dijk played important roles in persuading Núñez to join, including direct conversations during April’s Champions League quarter-final between Benfica and Liverpool, in which he scored twice.

Núñez is said to consider Klopp as “the best coach in the world”, and Van Dijk was so impressed that he named him alongside Sergio Agüero, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland as one of the most difficult strikers he had played against.

Núñez’s former club Almeria are due to receive 20 per cent of any profit above the £20.4 million Benfica paid for him in 2020.

Liverpool agree fee for Darwin Nunez

Liverpool have agreed a fee for Benfica’s Darwin Nunez understood to be worth €75 million (£64.1 million), with a further €25 million (£21.4 million) in potential add-ons.

Nunez, 22, is set to sign a six-year deal with Liverpool and will undergo a medical on Monday.

Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward has spent the weekend in Lisbon negotiating with Benfica president Rui Costa.

Nunez, meanwhile, has been on international duty with Uruguay but was left out of their squad for a friendly against Panama on Saturday and flew to Madrid where he has been waiting for the finer details of the deal to be ironed out.

The Athletic reported on Thursday that Liverpool had agreed personal terms with Nunez over a potential move to Anfield, but at that stage nothing had been signed.

It’s understood that the structure of the fee had been the main detail in need of resolution.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of Nunez as the club target a replacement for Sadio Mane, who is expected to join Bayern Munich.

Liverpool rejected a second bid for Mane from the German side on Wednesday worth £30 million.

Liverpool believe Nunez, who scored 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica in 2021-22, would be the perfect fit in terms of his style and his ability to play out wide and through the middle.

Benfica bought Nunez from Almeria for €24 million in 2020 and the Spanish club would be entitled to 20 per cent of any profit if, as expected, the deal is completed.

Full Klopp pre-season for himself and Diaz too. Great to get the business done early.

Will be interesting to see what, if anything, we do in terms of midfield now.

If we don't bring in a world class midfielder with pace then this window will have been a failure imo, regardless of our other acquisitions.

£64 million up front. Good deal by us. Mane wants out, so good to get something for him rather than replacing him next year (Salah will definitely walk for free too)

With Mane, Minamino, Ox, Williams covering this and the Carvalho fee. Does that leave funds to go big on a midfielder too?

We desperately need at least one

It would for me be a big mistake not to add quality to our midfield this summer...we really need it - we have too many unreliable fitness wise and unproven midfielders and it is for me the one area in a boss squad that needs improvement.

I honestly believe if our midfield had not been a revolving door and changing pretty much week to week in first half of season just ended that we would have walked the league.

Just missing that wee bit of cheating from our main rival.
