If you want to play Series X and S upgraded games they have to be installed to either the internal SSD or the external SSD as you've linked to. If you just want to play or store Xbox one games then a normal external HDD will be fine.

Cheers pal; it's the internal he needs then.

9 year old has a switch, looking for an Xbox for Christmas. All he plays is FIFA and Fortnite. Question is does he need an X or will he even notice the difference between the 2?

Switch to Series S is a big jump. Also FIFA on switch is inferior to Xbox. Only downside is lack of portability.

S is fine for what he needs.

I bought an S for Starfield and the console itself runs it fine, the game crashes a fair bit but it's definitely game side not console as it's caused by quick resume (which is on both S & X) or input combinations (going in and out of the scanner and trying to launch the menu before it's complete etc).

If you're budgeting for an X but get him an S you could look at picking up one of the screen attachments for it, obviously doesn't make it as portable as the switch but if he's ever away from home, staying at family etc where he doesn't have access to a TV all the time, then it's a handy option to have.
