Report: Liverpool open negotiations with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen

There may be no action on the pitch for Liverpool fans to enjoy watching, but the rumour mill has produced another snippet of interesting news.

After yesterday’s link to Napoli striker Dries Mertens, comes another forward being linked this time a much younger prospect.

Victor Osimhen has had an outstanding first season in the Ligue 1 for Lille after joining from Belgian side Charleroi last summer.

The 21 year-old has scored 17 goals in all competitions for LOSC which has included 13 in the top flight along with four assists.

Metro (via Le10 Sport) reports Liverpool have now entered the race for Osimhen after making their first contact with the forward’s camp.

The report continues by saying the Reds will face fierce competition with a number of top English clubs also very keen.

However in these coronavirus times we are currently living in, the fee could be something of a stumbling block with Lille demanding a fee of around £60million.

In terms of his style of play of Osimhen, the Nigerian international is 185cm tall and for a player his height, is quite agile and possesses very good body balance and coordination. 

He is a very difficult player to shrug off the ball when he’s shielding or dribbling it due to the mixture of his strength and body balance. 

His good agility also means that despite his fairly large frame, Osimhen can move and change directions with or without the ball quite quickly while being also very good in the air.

 

Regarding finishing, Osimhen is described as clinical and someone who has very good instincts in and around the box.

 

Osimhen who collected the Golden Boot and Silver Ball in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, recently told The Independent about his desire to play in England one day.

"I would like to play for a big club in England.

“I’ve spoken to Odion [Ighalo] about it. He gave me very good advice, he’s a legend and a big brother. 

“My goal is to play at one of the biggest clubs in the world but now I’m very happy in Lille. 

“My priority is to play a lot of games. Signing for a big club and being on the bench is not exciting for me.”

The striker who cites Didier Drogba as his idol has seen a lot in his young life but knows the sky is the limit and he has a lot to be thankful for.

“If I wasn’t playing football, I’d be selling stuff to help my family.

 

"After I lost my mum [aged six], my dad lost his job and me and my siblings would sell sachets of water to those working at the dumpsite in the sun. 

“It was really hard, but everything is in the past now. I’m happy I went through that phase of life because it helped me live up to my dreams.”

“Without football I don’t know where I’d be. It’s my life. 

"I’m on this Earth to play football. I still have a lot of ambitions and objectives to achieve and I’m not there yet. But when I think of how far I’ve come, I’m really proud of myself.”

Wherever he ends up next you sense with that attitude, Osimhen is set to have a long and successful career.

A Spanish stat nerd who sells his player scouting software to some of the biggest sides in Europe was interviewed in one of the Sunday newspapers last weekend. Pretty sure he named this guy as an example of a somebody who there'll be a major focus on in the summer because of his various figures. £60m sounds a bit much though.
